Son‘s PC is 4 year old now, spec wise has Intel i5 4460 3.2GHz Quad Core, 8GB RAM, GTX 750TI 2GB, HDD in it, plays league of legends I believe mostly.

I‘m happy to upgrade components for him, as he doesn’t, which was original plan, but just wonder if it’s worth doing this, or getting a new one. Budget max is £500 without windows as already have it, and don’t need keyboard, mouse or monitor.

So what’s the sort of minimum graphics card and CPU I should be looking for please if get a system at my budget.

I know people will say to spend the £500, or do, on the GPU alone, but I can’t.

I’m thinking now that I should buy a GPU,

Which slot is the current GPU so I can look for new GPU?

Also if I got a new GPU would the CPU be a bottleneck or is it still ok?

What's the goal of the upgrade? Might be wrong but a quick google suggests league of legends isn't very demanding to run.

Putting a SSD and installing windows on it will make the computer feel a lot snappier.

You could put something like a 1660 super or rx 580 in which are significantly more powerful than the 750ti.

CPU would be the most costly upgrade assuming you do not get a higher end GPU, as you'd need a new motherboard and ram too.

Slightly over budget but you could sell his old parts to cover the excess and a bit more.

You could drop in what will be by then a cheap 8 core 3700x/4700x a couple of years down the road which should last for another 5.

Thanks for replies.

Goal is it’s a birthday present for him, he hasn’t done any upgrades, and suppose it’s 4 year old so maybe due one. I know nothing about LoL but looking today, your spot on, doesn’t need much spec. I tried to look and I think he did try a few steam games but maybe they didn’t run.

Having had a rethink may now be upgrading only now, and less total budget. The GTX 1660 is a little too much. I see the GTX 1650 though for around £150, is this still decent upgrade? Be more happy with that, as I also want to get him a small SSD as mentioned, just for windows install, be good?

What I don’t know is if getting say a GTX 1650 will the CPU then be a massive bottleneck or would it be ok matched with the current CPU?

Also there seems to be 3 types of GTX 1650 which is best, what is difference? Is there a better GPU for current setup for same money?

I'd take the RX580 8GB over a 1650S due to the limited VRAM on the latter.

Better CPU than the 3300X, I'd say £140 is a poor price for that chip when the 3600 isn't that much more.
Better motherboard than the Gigabyte B450 Elite, and it isn't b-stock. You'll need to ask OCUK when they expect to get it back in stock though.
RAM is a little slower but given the price difference I think it's a fair trade off.

You could also opt for this motherboard if you don't want M-ATX, they're pretty much identical outside of form factor:

Definitely do not get a 1650 when you can get the 1650 Super (hooray for confusing model names) for less than £10 more, which is a significantly better card: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pali...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-056-pl.html

580 is another option for a bit more which is less efficient (older card) but performs similarly and as mentioned before has 8GB vram Vs the 4 on the 1650S. Either card is going to be a huge upgrade on the 750ti

I'd just look at getting a SSD and new GPU personally if all he's doing is playing the likes of leagues of legends. Maybe an extra 8GB too.

580 or 1650S would be a big jump and I doubt the CPU would cause too many issues in those games.

I think this is the most sensible choice.

Great CPU which will last quite a while, the RX580 will play pretty much anything at 1080p High and 3000Mhz is still plenty.

Typical I find what I thought was a good GPU the 1650 and now it’s a dud! So glad I asked thanks.

This sounds a really good plan, appreciate your help. I did have a sneaky peak and seen some other games installed, like TC division 2 would the above play these ok?

Also would the RX580 be the same slot etc that his GeForce 750 TI is in?

So the 1650 is a no but 1650S is ok, what about the lower RC 570, or even 560?

What is the difference between all the different makes of say the 1650S or the RX580?

I’m really surprised that the 4 year old CPU is still ok to use then, I’m glad!

On the SSD could this just be a small one to put Windows 10 on? So say a 240Gb one?

Thanks again for help appreciate it all

240 is plenty for Windows.

The 1650 Super was a pretty big update to combat Amd with not too much increase in cost, so makes the non Super pretty poor value by comparison.

Yep same slot, worth running DDU to remove the existing drivers before you switch the cards over. May need to check your power supply has a cable with the right number of pins for the card, 1650S is 6 pin, 580 is 8 pin whilst I think the 750ti doesn't actually need power pins and just runs off the pcie slot.

I wouldn't go for a 570 or 560, just not worth the money new. Buying a 580 or similar second hand would be a better option imo. Can get a rough idea of how different models compare under relative performance here: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-1650-super.c3411

The difference in brands mainly just comes down to the cooling system used, so affects temperature and noise of the card. Providing the cooler isn't junk performance differences should be marginal

Another vote for GPU + SSD from me. Upgrade the RAM as well to give a noticeable boost in all areas:

The Intel 4000 series ran on DDR3, that RAM wont work with his setup.

@OP: Ask him if he would play other games if his computer was up to it before changing anything. That old quad core i5 will be starting to struggle with newer games.

Oops! Yeah add 16gb ddr3 instead then. Can the motherboard take a 6 core CPU?

Thanks again for help, decided on the Palit GTX 1650 Super as above.

Can someone confirm if I would need a connector as suggested above? Not sure on the PSU he has but the MB is a Gigabyte GA-H81M-H (rev. 2.1) if that helps?

Thanks
