Please help with monitor choice!

Hi

I recently built a new gaming PC. It's a 7800X3D CPu, 7900XTX GPU and 32GB RAM, so should be capable of pretty much everything!

My Monitor was not upgraded at the point I made this PC but now the time has come.

I have a very old, 2011 BenQ GL2450-B, which is 24" and 1080P, and apprently has the following specs:
5ms response time
250 cd/m2 brightness
170/160 viewning angle
1000:1 static contract
12000000:1 dynamic contrast
50-76hzx refresh rate
NTSC 72% (whatever that means!0

So I'm thinking that pretty much any new monitor is going to be a noticable improvement, but ||I am completely bewildered by the monitor names, the fact that multiple models can have apparently the same specs yet wildly different prices, the way one youtube channel will say one is great and another will say it's bad. It's more confusing that any PC parts I had to choose from. So I need help please.

Size wise I'm looking at 27". I think that will be a nice size and larger may be too big (although I remember thinking the 24" might be a bit too large 13 years ago!).
1440P seems to be the way to go for resolution....A friend keeps saying why not go 4K with the new PC being capable, but I'm not so sure. I feel it would be big demands on the PC for little return, and I can defintely enjoy great looking games for years to come at 1440P...Open to opinions though.

I'm thinking to spend around £300-maybe up to £400 if it seems really worth it.

I seem to keep coming back to the MSI G274QPX as a potential buy. High refresh rate of 240hx and apprently decent all round. But no (proper)HDR which sounds like a good feature? It has G-sync, but do I need A-synch for my AMD PC?
But is 240hz necessary? I was looking at a 165hz version recently (lost it now!) and surely that would be just as decent, so perhaps I should look at lower hz to gain....something?
Theres the "MSI 27" MAG 275CQRF QD 2560x1440 VA 170Hz 1ms A-Sync HDR", aside from being curved and lower hz what's the difference? "HDR ready" sounds like "not HDR" to me.
Then there are Dell 2724D which is cheap and looks the same? Or LG variations. Again, cant see the much different aside from extra price.

I was on the verge of ordering a Coolermaster Tempest GP27Q because while watching a monitors unboxd vid on you tube it was higher in all their test charts than the MSI, yet they didnt recommend it over the MSI. Why, I dont know..

As you can see I am lost....any advise or suggestions would be greatfully received.

Thank you

There is a sweet spot in terms of resolution vs performance, 1440p will be more in the sweet spot. You don't really need 4K on a 27" monitor IMO.

Both FreeSync (AMD) and G-SYNC (NVIDIA) are both variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies designed to improve gaming performance by matching the refresh rate of the monitor with the framerate of the graphic card, preventing screen tearing and minimising input lag and display stuttering. However, G-Sync is a proprietary technology from NVIDIA, whereas FreeSync is an open standard developed by AMD. If you have an AMD graphics card, then ideally you would choose an AMD FreeSync monitor.

165Hz should be fast enough unless you are an ultra competitive gamer looking for an edge, in which case go for 240Hz.

MSI make good monitors. This looks a good possibility for you, an IPS screen is nicer than VA:

MSI £348.95

So does this:

Asus £349

Hopefully the original poster won’t mind me jumping in on this as I’m also clueless now that I’m looking for a new monitor. I only play single player, story driven games so was thinking 4k but was only going for 27 to 32 in size. Is 1440 still the best choice?

27 inch is far better suited to 1440p. 32 is better suited to 4k.

Looking at your CPU and GPU i'd definitely be pushing for a 4K monitor if I were you, but obviously that's going to be difficult on your budget.

I was in the same boat recently and bought a B grade 32" Corsair 4K, at around half price, from here and never looked back.

Worth considering IMO.

It depends on what GPU you have, 4K is a lot more demanding than 1440p - the OP has a good combo for 4K.

If the OP wanted to go to 32" then it would be worth considering 4K, but his budget is a bit below these monitors. I would say stick to 27" for now, and save up to go to town a bit with a 32" OLED if he can later.

What's your budget?

If you want high refresh rates but don't have the highest performance graphic card then 1440 is a better choice than 4K, because 4K is very demanding for high refresh rates.

Thanks for your reply.

Interestingly that MSI is filtered out bvy selecting 27" so i didnt spot it!!
Would that be the same as the

MSI 27" G274QPX 2560x1440 Rapid IPS 240Hz 1ms G-Sync HDR 400 Widescreen Gaming Monitor

That I was going for, aside from being A-synch (and therefore AMD compatible) and the lower refresh rate? I dont think I need 240hz to be honest. Going from 60hz to 180 is more than enough i would think!!

Hi. Thanks for your comment.

Would you say 4k is worth it? Has it caused you any PC problems? I suppose I have this idea that my PC will be forever straining to deal with 4k when I wouldnt really notice the difference at 1440p and 27"...
Then again I could probably run games at 1440p if they were causing problems...

My budget could be higher, but it would have to be well worth it. I'm actually aiming at the 27" 1440p because i came to teh conclusion it would be the genuine best oiption from all the bits I read. Altough as I said, I have become confused by the whole business!

Hi. The difference is in how the adaptive sync is described on OCUK. The one I gave showed "adaptiveSync" and the one you gave showed "NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible". You will need to check that your graphics card plays well with the monitor sync tech (monitor sync tech can match to graphics card), I think there is a chance both would work, but you will have to do a bit more research or ask OCUK customer service as they will have more knowledge than me.

The manufacturer pages are:

Mine:

Yours:

It looks like they are both "NVIDIA G-sync compatible".

In the end I went with your option. It's actually a newer model than the other one on the site (has E2 on the end of the name), and has 180hz instead of 160hz of the model I'd been looking at yet is considerably cheaper!.

Anyway, I think this 1440p 180hz screen will do me nicely so thank you for your thoughts and advice!

OK great! You're welcome and do please write a few words on how you find it when you can.
