So I have a problem that's been going on for months...

“The DNS server isn't responding”

I'm getting this message upto 4/5/6 times a day and its doing my head in. Sometimes turning off my D-Link (DSL-504T) router/modem helps but the problem comes back. I've looked in my “local Area Connection Status” and im still sending/ receiving bytes. I've been on google and followed some steps on answers.microsoft.com but the problem still persists.

I dont know if its my pc, my service provider or my D-Link modem. (I also have a laptop and that wont connect either, so im guessing its not my pc)

I'm using an Asus Crosshair V with Intel(R) 82583V Gigabit Network Connection. Running all 3 diagnostics tests gets a pass.
Using Firefox gets the same results
Sometimes utorrent still works when I get the problem...?!!?
I've tried disabling my avast internet security, as well as Microsoft firewall.
Also tried my other D-Link 502T router/modem

I'm now at my witts end..... any pros out there wanna help me please?! Oh, look at that my internet is now working again... but for how long?

Cheers ... sorry about the big pics

Go to the cmd, type ipconfig /all and tell us your DNS. If its 192.168.1.1 that is your routers IP address try changing to as stated above the google or openDNS servers.

is it safe to post a pic of my findings.... im not really sure what to look for as there is a lot of numbers laid out in front of me.

Who's DNS servers are you using?

Have you tried using Google (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220)?

Who's? mine!? whos would i be using?!

Its says this: DNS servers........ 10.1.1.1

edit. sorry, not really good at this stuff. build a pc/install software i can do,
everthing else = ?

edit. im trying there now... OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220)

Now after 20mins my internet is working again....!

Any other ideas?!?! ;)

The connection to your router looks OK in that you can ping your gateway etc. Suggest the problem may be with the router not having a connection to the internet, have you checked your phone line? You can do this by accessing you router URL with a web browser to see if it's showing an active connection.

I'll have a look....

When i look under the WAN Settings this is what i get.

Apology's for slow response... but my internet is crap!

well thats your issue then, not DNS...

1) verify you cannot get bt infinity / faster BB (i think they call borked inifinity something like that)
2) try a dlink 2640 router (£9 on the bay) or if anyone else can suggest router with as good an ADSL chip
3) master socket everything disconnected to make sure there is no issue in the house
4) change the MTU to the smallest it will accept (1300 or 1400 i think)
5) move the ADSL connection method down a notch, if its connected with ADSL2+ change to ADSL2, if its ADSL2 try g.GMT you need to power cycle and physically remove the phone cable for a sec (well not convinced you need to do the last bit (remove cable) but ISP's insist its required and it only takes 5 seconds)
6) try a different network card (unless you have verified it does the same on different computers on the network)

try some combination of the above

4. i googled mtu and thats the correct setting.... I have never played with it before I had a customer with constant online gaming disconnections / timeouts several times a day for a year.. I changed the setting from 1492 to 1300, the ping timeouts turned into long pings (but still got a responce) and his disconnections stopped... (its a 1min thing to change so worth a go).
5. its a setting in the config to do with ADSL, in the UK anway I ahve solved a few very unreliable connections by changing adsl2 to G.DMT (got it wrong in my post) its a slower connection method but more reliable. (not sure if it will work where you are, try one of the other older settings if that one does not work)
6) try a friends laptop or another machine to be 100% sure... if you dont have a spare net card try setting a ping going to your router there should never be a timeout, if there are timeouts buy a cheap net card...

So my internet went down again but for only 15mins this time

My DNS setting are set to above open DNS
I unplugged the landline
MTU set at 1300
I think the above steps have helped.... so thank you guys!

What else can i do.... & why the hell does this keep happening (last 6 months) it never use to?

line fault, I assume you have spoken to the ISP?

ask your ISP what your profile speed is if they say 4mb ask if it can be reduced to 2 or 3mb

also if all else fails buy a dlink 2640r from the bay,

in the UK i look at a lot of adsl issues, frequently I put these box's in to stabalise issues like yours, I assume the adsl chip set / firmware is exceptionally good at dealing with poor quality lines... you can pick them up for £9 any one will do it does not matter (in the uk anyway) which ISP its braded / made for... if it does not help you can resell it an all you lost is £2 postage and a few hours messing about...

Yeah, i have spoen to them a few weeks ago.

They said they would call me and set up some sort of (ping) test... guess what? They never called me back.... not suprising hey? ****en useless! ***Fully star out all swear words***

I'm going to call them back tomorrow. Im looking for the D-Link 2640r right now.

Thanks for your help!
