Hello. I'm new to these forums and to PC's in general.

I'm having trouble with my Intel i7 quad core 950 CPU, it's heating to over 60'C on idle. My case doesn't have adequate cooling and I can feel the hot air even with the side of the case off. Does anyone know if a case with 4 fans would solve this? Or a new heatsink?

I also bought a Nvidia GTX 580 and I'm sure this isn't going to help my heating problems. My power supply model is 750 watt CIC (I think) and it's a very cheap make. Could this also be an issue trying to run an i7 and 580 card?

My mother board is an Asus PS6 STE and I run 6GB ram (Two ram slots were broken, A1 and A2).

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'll delete it if so. Hope for a reply x

Welcome to OcUK.

What heatsink do you have? Have you tried reapplying thermal paste or lapping the cpu and heatsink?

Cheap PSUs are never a good idea although 750watt should be enough to run the cpu and gfx.

I'm not entirely sure how helpful this can be, but I had a similar problem, albeit on a much older processor.

Turns out that the reason my CPU was idling at 58 C was because the fan and the fins were absolutely stuffed with dust. Gave it a good clean and when I booted back up again, it was down to 40.

I would post pictures, but this is a family-friendly forum, and the ammount of dust in those poor components was just obscene!

If it's as clean as it should be in there, however, then perhaps a new heatsink should be considered.

what brand of psu is it ?

what case do you currently have.

what are you using to measure the temp, and does the temp drop with the side of the case off ?

as per Beerbaron what cooler do you have and have you tried reapplying thermal paste/reseating the cooler.

Hello thanks for the replies! My CPU temp runs at 58'C idle with the case off fans turned up full speed and fans have full power on too.

I use PC Probe II to monitor the CPU temperature it came with the intel i7 package. The heat sink too is the basic fan ..thing..that came with the CPU. I'm not the best at computers, I just enjoy the games lol.

To help with the cooling of CPU and the huge graphics card.

Some people reccomended water cooling and an open case. But I have a small cat that would crawl in and scratch the componments and if water cooling breaks I couldnt afford a whole new PC.

My case right now was from Ebay so Im not sure. It has one tiny fan and two vents. I cleaned all the dust out too.

My power supply seems very very cheap and I think would have trouble handling new graphics card.

Thank you for your replies! I've been thrown in the deep end trying to figure it all out!
