Hi All,

I want to upgrade my monitor to 24" or 28".

I have a budget of £200 - £300 max

Uses will be Gaming primarily and general usage, will NOT be used for HD Films I have a mahoosive Bravia for that job :-)

My Gfx card is the 2gig 4890, so the panel must be ideally HDMI.

I have had a Samsung 215TW for some time now which has never given me any issues.

So, please can you suggest a gaming monitor that takes into conisderation my parameters above.

On anaother note i have seen the Hans G 28" for reasonable money - is it all size and no quality with this panel ? Reviews seems mixed. ?!?!?!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide !

Ta.

You'll be hard pushed to get a 27" monitor for that budget, you're definitely looking closer to a 24"

If you like Samsung why not stick to a Syncmaster? 2433BW is around £200 and a T240HD is around £300

Thanks for the response, the problem I have is the 2433BW does not have HDMI and the T240HD has freeview that I will never use so why pay for features I dont want or need ?

Why the need for HDMI? If you are just gaming from the PC conecting via the DVI cable gives identical picture quality and doesn't constrain your monitor choices.

Personally, I have been using non-TN monitors for years now and I simply can't bring myself to recommend TN panel screens to people, no matter how big they happen to be or how many 000s are in the contrast ratio.

With this in mind, I suggest having a look at this monitor. its a bit smaller than you specified, but the image quality and viewing angles more than make up for it, here is an in-depth review. Also, this slightly larger screen , using the same panel technology is arriving soon. However, I haven't seen any in-depth reviews for it yet - so I wouldn't suggest buying it till these reviews come out.

Thanks Cmndr,

So are we saying that DVI gives as good a picture as HDMI ? If so then yes it does open the monitor choices. I dont see a point spending £250 on the 22" and playing in the same res as I am now, with respect to your other choicem, wont I get issues at the 1080 res with games ? .i.e needing res hacks ?

No worries.

Yea, HDMI and DVI are actually the same thing, its just that HDMI carries the audio too - so they are good for TVs. (HDMI Specification 1.3a, page 136). So the picture quality is identical.

The reason you may consider paying that kind of money is because of the panel technology. Your current monitor, as well as pretty much all other monitors in this price range use us TN panels, while the ones I linked to use far superior IPS panels. Here is an outline of the differences.

As for your final question about the final 1080p monitor I liked to. I'm not sure what you mean about needing to use res hacks to play with games. 1920x1080 is a standard resolution, and is selectable in all modern games.

Fair enough mate - just obviosuly showing my lack of knowledge in this space.

That being said if I was set on getting a 24" monitor which one would you go for ?

Thanks again for your detailed overview and links to further knowledge.

If it had to be a 24in, this is the one I would go for. My friend has one and he finds it fantastic.

The price is pretty daunting, but every other 24in under £400 uses a TN panel, which just doesn't cut the mustard for me any more.

I'd get a 2nd hand DELL 2407WFP any day for a decent gaming monitor under £300. Definately your best bet. Don't be detered by it being 2nd hand. As long as it works with no dead pixels. pref warranty left. You'll love it!

Heard about these - dont I have to worry about the Revison number or build date / or something like that ?

@ Ivan - Way over my budget but thanks for replying pal.
