Is it a SATA disk or IDE? If it is SATA then try a ne wcable and ensure that you are laoding the drivers when prompted. If it is IDE then try a new cable.

you don't need to install drivers to use a SATA drive. only to use RAID.
but thats a good point, i've known SATA drives to fail miserably just because the sata cable was slightly *skwonk* in the socket.
You can use a different install, done it before without issues, but other times it hasn't worked at all. As a general rule, the hardware has to be similar, though for the amount of time it takes to install XP again on a new machine, you may aswell just do it fresh, it'd be much better.
Just make sure you put your data somewhere sensible (like another partition) and it's easy.

yes you do. if not id love to know how you did it. Vist has them, as far as I am aware XP does not, and never has done for me

been installing XP on PC's with integrated SATA controllers for years and never had to install drivers beforehand
