hi
i may need to get a new graphics card for my 5 year old Mesh pc but dont know which one to buy??

i think my current geforce 7800gtx is broken as my pc crashed while playing sniper ghost warrior and now it wont boot properly and there's vertical stripes at the boot up screens!! ( ive looked online and this is apparently a busted graphics card!)
id like to upgrade to a more recent card anyway so i can play games at a better setting, but dont know if i can get a middle/top of the range card to work with the rest of my system? (dont want to have to start from scratch with new mobo etc!)

any advice would be greatly appreciated
thank you.

pc spec:
asus a8n-sli deluxe , n force 4 mobo, 550w psu, 4gb ddr ram (pc 3200, 400mhz)
athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor, 300gb hard drive, windows xp sp3
256mb nvidia geforce 7800gtx

NB [-ive never used a forum before so apologies if ive omitted anything]

460 gtx great price and great overclockers any thing higher spec than this and u will have to get a better power supply

Welcome to the forum.

I have been deliberating which system to go for - and ultimately the graphics card is the component that causes the most grief lol!

I have ended up going for the AMD 6870. It is one of the top mid-range cards, uses little power, runs quietly and is great value for money.

I'm sure you will get more technically informed answers than I offer, but this is my reasoning based on many others recommendations.

Hope this helps.

What's your budget?

gtx 460 seconded .. even the 768 version for poor people like me clocks like crazy.. ive only stopped at 850mhz gpu out of sheer fear and cowardice

but even at stock this thing is quiet as a mouse and runs everything you throw at it, it would be your cpu/ram that would slow you down more than this card.

Could do with a few more details to give the best advice.

What version of XP are you running, 32 bit ?

What model is your PSU ?

And what is the clock speed of your CPU ?

thanks for the replies
i was going to spend about £100-£140 on a graphics card.
i am using 32 bit windows xp
all i can make out on the back of the psu is: hec, sleeve bearing, dc12 volt, 0.11a, fd 1280205s-1a.
and ive no idea about the clock speed of the cpu, where do i find this out?
many thanks

if the cpu is at stock then i wouldnt go spending heaps on a gpu. 460 768mb or 1gb if good deal. it also depends what resolution you game at

CPUZ will give all the details of your CPU and its worth looking in the CPU overclocking section to up your CPU speed.

With 4Gb of RAM and a 32bit OS you really need to be looking at a 512Mb graphics card as you are limited to around 4Gb total of memory.

With everything considered the best card for you is a 512Mb version of the HD5770 to maximise the usable system memory.

Overclockers don't stock this card but a google search for a Sapphire HD 5770 512MB will turn up the cards.

thanks for your opinions
ive been in two minds about either getting a decent improvement over my old card or just a similar one that would be cheap and do for now, but i think i might go for a gtx 460 768mb. (as long as it is quiet!)

my other concern is the 6 pin power connection. i think i only have one but how many does this card usually need?
if its two, what do i do then? i know there are adapters for other plugs but how do i know which one(s) can be used in my case, they all seem to be connected to something, directly or indirectly?

thanks for your help

thanks dave beast,
i was looking at that card, i think it ticks all the boxes.

but how do you know it definitely only has one 6 pin power socket? i couldnt find that info anywhere and i want to be certain itll work ok before i buy it
cheers

thats what i was afraid of!!

my power supply is a hec 550 td - pte
info panel states the following:
d/c output: +3.3v/ +5v/ +12v1/ +12v2/ -12v/ +5vsb
......max A: 30a/ 38a/ 18a/ 17a/ 0.3a/ 2a
+5v & +3.3v combined 185w
total output 550w

i can only see one 6 pin power connector but what about the other?
is there another way of connecting power to that? i heard about using a molex to 6pin adapter cable but what does this attach to?

appreciate any help, i really need to get this sorted as i can only get my pc on in vga mode, with the screen at 640 x 480!!

pc spec:
asus a8n-sli deluxe, n force 4 mobo, 550w psu, 4gb ddr ram (pc 3200, 400mhz)
athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor, 300gb hard drive, windows xp sp3 (32 bit)
256mb nvidia geforce 7800gtx (-not working properly!)

No offense to people that are suggesting the GTX470 768MB, but if you are not gonna upgrade your system in foreseeable future, I don't think it's worth spending £100+ on a graphic card, especially your current CPU WILL bottleneck the GTX460 768MB.

With your current CPU at stock speed, I'd say just go and pick up a 2nd hand (1xPCI-E 6-pin) 8800GT/9800GTfor £35, 9800GTX+/GTS250 or HD4850 for around £40...they all would be more than twice as fast as your 7800GTX.

spot on, heck a 4870/260 would be sweet
