Because we voted for a goverment, i.e. labour. As they hold the most seats they can appoint who is leader of their part and thus the goverment.

This is a shorter term as the next general election is in 2yrs time iirc.

we are a democratic country / we are a democracy :)

i dont get it either to be honest. but thats the way it works. i guess it comes down to the fact that we vote for parties not individuals.

so the labour party hold power so whoever is leader of the labour party is PM. probably not the most democratic system and i would prefer to see an election for the role of PM but there is not much we can do untill Gordon No Personality Brown calls a general election.

that ****** me off too. they can vote on our issues and we have no say in theirs.

badly thought through devolution imho.

As above, we vote for individual MPs for a head of state. While Tony may have thought he was President, he most certainly was not. Technically the Prime Minister has no more more power than any other MP.

Not quite - we voted for an MP, to represent our area (or constituency) in parliament. Once the election is over, the party with an overall majority of MPs (i.e. >50% of seats) is asked to form a government by the Queen.

Who is the leader of that party is a matter only for that party I'm afraid. I don't particularly like it either.

That's why, El. If you were voting for the (wo)man we'd have a President instead of a PM.

Quite a few of my colleagues have asked exactly the same question over the past few days. Goes to show that a lot of folk just see the democratic process as a popularity contest.

Democracy? Someone told you we lived in a democracy and you believed them? :D :) :D

The government just tells you that you do so you think your important. Don't let it worry you too much. There arn't any real democracies, we just lie about it more than some and less than others.

:edit: Actually John Major was one of the beter leaders we have had in recent times. It wasn't his fault though so don't hold it against him. :edit:

Yes we do live in a democracy - go look up the dictionary definition if you don't believe me. I'm curious as to what in your opinion a "real democracy" is?

Unless you live in Sedgefield, you didn't vote for Blair either. It was also made clear that he was going to step down during this term before the last election.

Are you suggesting that because Brown will take over from Blair, the UK is somehow not a democracy?

It was? Quite the contrary. Before the previous election Blair categorically said, and I heard the sickening sound bite-pocked speech this morning, that he would serve a full term if re-elected. As usual, he lied.

Democracy, direct translation, Rule By the People.

If you wanted a true democracy in a country the size of Britain it would be simple. Every 4 years you would draw 1000 National Insurance numbers out of a hat and those people would decide how the country was run. It would be an absolutely representative system.

The people do not rule, never have, never will. Democracy has never existed anywhere that I am aware of other than as a theoretical idea. Can you honestly say that you think your MP solely looks out your constituencies best interest? Do you even know who he is and what he has said in the last parliament? Did your constituency pick the person best able to give voice to what you wanted them to? Or did you pick one of 3 maybe four people that all told you more or less the same thing? Democracy is a lie fed to the masses as a way of kidding them that their decision makes any real difference.
