I need a second hard disk for storage but not sure which one to go for, something around the 400 - 500 GB size.
My main drive is a 150Gb raptor and its filing up quickly!!

cheers

The Western Digital AAKS series of drives are very quick (not far behind Raptors) and fairly well priced as well. The Seagate 7200.10 series are a good second choice, they were first but I think the AAKS just shade it in speed terms. :)

i dont know a lot about RAID and multiple hard disk setups and whatnot, with the second drive do i just connect it up let windows (Vista) detect it and then format it to NTFS myself and its ready to go?
forgive the lack of knowledge ;)

You don't have to worry about Raid here, just plug in the new hard drive and let it go into Windows, you might have to format it in Drive Management (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Drive Managment or similar) but other than that it is just plug it in and on you go. :)

What about Samsung Sipoint stuffs? im in the same situation kind off, except i have 1 320gib Seagate .10 and need more space and thinking of a 400gib sammy or even contemplating raid 0, but dont think is will take the risk.

The Samsung HDDs are very quiet but performance wise not as good as AAKS or 7200.10s

But they should be fine for storage.

I'm also looking for a second hard disk to use for storage as well and I'm trying to decide between the Wester Digital and Samsung 500GB drives. I'm a bit confused though because most members here have said the Western Digital is faster than the Samsung but the latest test in Custom PC magazine has the Samsung faster in some tests such as Outer Zone STR(read), Inner zone STR (write), Far Cry level loading time and both drives got the same result in the Paint Shop Pro image editing test. So does that mean I won't notice much between them in real world situations? I'm tempted by the Samsung because of the lower noise levels.

ooo snap. i think im going for the samsung, but 400gib. its either that or get another barracuda .10 and raid 0 them, but im a bit wary of losing data if one dies.
