That'd do nicely. Interestingly, a 20" widescreen costs as much as a 17" widescreen.

That looks good to me although I might still be tempted to get 2gb of Ram given that it is only about £15 more.

Are you sure that screen is any good? i would ahve thought its better to lose an inch and get a better screen. And i get 2gb for just the 15 quisd more as well.

The numbers of the screen suggest that it is better than the equivalently-priced 19" model. He said the budget was minimal so I reckoned that since 1 GiB RAM is all that's necessary for those tasks, the extra expenditure of 15 quid would not be necessary.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to add it but I would by no means consider the spec deficient without 2 GiB RAM.
