Hi guys, sorry to add another "spec me" thread to the multitude.

I have an X2 4400+. The stock fan has been fine for the past ~18 months, but has recently started whistling. It's doing my head in.

I figure I could just replace it with a different fan, but I'd much rather go the whole hog and try to silence my system, as I'm off to uni soon and so I'll have to sleep close to it.

Specs:

A8N-Sli Premium mobo.
X2 4400+ (stock cooler and fan)
7800 GTX
2 sticks of ram in twinned configuration, hence worries about fan clearance issues e.g. with the Scythe Ninja Mini.
Akasa Eclipse case, currently with 2x Akasa silent amber fans.

Obviously the main thing is a cooler that's as quiet as possible. I don't overclock atm, but it'd be nice if I had a cooler that was capable of handling an o/c, so I'd have the option in the future. If it's a cooler that requires buying a separate fan, I'd like a recommendation for a silent fan too, if possible?

Budget's fairly big, if it's worth it I'll pay it for the blessed lack of noise ;).

If you need anymore info please just ask, that includes me measuring the case if needed.

Many thanks in advance, eagerly awaiting the day when I don't wince when the pc's switched on.

AnandTech:
We measured noise levels with the Noctua NH-U12F under both load and idle conditions. Results were then compared to the system noise floor. In all cases - stock fan, SilenX cooler, and dual Noctua fans in push-pull - the measured noise levels were below the system noise floor. The Noctua is also subjectively an exceptionally quiet heatpipe tower.

The Thermalright Ultra 120 is stated to be for socket AM2/LGA775.

Unless I'm wrong, my X2 4400+ is a socket 939.

Would the cooler still fit?

from the horses mouth
Compatibility:

INTEL: All Intel P4 LGA775 processors
AMD: Athlon64 / FX / X2 / Opteron all models
To use on an AM2 platform you will need to purchase the Ultra-120 AM2 adapter found

Thanks for all the help so far.

Just one more n00b question then I'll be ready to purchase:

The Thermalright Ultra 120 can apparently only be installed in certain orientations. I'd like a way to check which way it'll point on my motherboard, before buying. Am I missing an obvious way to do so?

Again, thanks everyone :).
