Hi all,

I have just replaced my Netgear Rangemax DG834N with a brand new Netgear WNDR3700 to aid in wireless streaming.

And as you know the WNDR3700 does not contain an ADSL modem so I need to make a purchase.

Im with O2 as my ISP, so I hear any ADSL modem with a broadcom chipset would give me the best speeds !! Can anyone recommend one?

If not could anyone recommed the Draytek Vigor 120? will I suffer in speeds because this doesnt use a broadcom chipset.

I would be most grateful for anyones thoughts on this,

Cheers

Huh... apparently not so maybe its end of life, but I imagine you could get one off of the 'bay :)

It does seem that adsl2 modems are becoming a thing of the past, after a quick google I have found very few and even less that I would trust so maybe its worth sending the WNDR3700 back and getting an adsl router?

There may be other options but I suggested this because I currently use it in bridged mode with my wrt54g and it works flawlessly.

In regards to the broadcom, the linksys uses a TI7200 chipset which isn't broadcom and I still get a respectable 4.5mb from a very long line length (5km+).

I went from my AM200 to using my DG834N in 'modem' only mode using DG Team firmware.
The bonus is, you can tweak the SNR at will, and it's proven to be very stable..

On default settings, the AM200 would sync about 800-1000kbps lower then my netgear..

The DG834N has a good broadcomm modem chipset, so is perfect for the job, if you've still got it, then I'd suggest flashing the the firmware and use it as a Modem! :)

Ooooo thats interesting Demon, Is it completely bridged when in modem mode?

i.e: you give the second router the public IP?

Thanks Demon, My DG834N is V1, Im sure thats a connexant chipset, unless you may know otherwise? my version doesnt have the push button on the front.

Ive been looking around and found this
D-Link DSL-320B Wired ADSL2+

Its has a broadcom chipset, whooopie !! anyone got any feedback on it?

Cheers

V1 DG834n is a BC chipset, you can run this router in modem mode only, use DG team firmware to tweak the line as well.

Thanks guys;

Gonna stay away from the D-Link, Sp00n thanks... read a few D-Link reviews in general, not to hot.

Gonna probably do what Locky & demon proposed,

If I flash DG Teams FW, could I reflash Netgears if I ever wanted to?

Also abit concerned I cant read DG Teams forums for advice, I need an invite, could anyone could help me out with this?

Cheers

Mine is the V1 DG834N, which is the one you want, as mentioned above, it is defo a Broadcomm chipset.

It does allow the Public IP to be passed through exactly as required..

You can reflash Netgear firmware after the fact, so it's easy to go back, but god knows why you would!

Download from here

As for forum access, I wouldn't worry too much, the firmware has been around for so long, there isn't much to 'see'.. They don't provide much help on setting it up etc, there are so many forums where the DGTeam firmware is mentioned, you should be able to google answers to any questions, or just ask away!

Thanks Demon,

Ok So I have flashed my Netgear DG834N and its currently set as stand-alone device Im going to hook up the WNDR3700, what settings should I adjust?

Also you mention tweaking the SNR, do you know of a LINK so I can read up on this, or have you got any tips.

Cheers

Guys;

I have done all of the above, The DG834N is running in Modem Only mode.
The IP address of this is now 192.168.0.7, I know this because I set it in the web based settings. But I can know longer access this page, the only page I can access is 192.168.0.1 which belongs to the WNDR3700.

Any advice to help me connect upto the DG834N's web based setting page?

Cheers

so the dg834 is plugged in to the WAN port of the WNDR3700?

You need to setup the dg834 on a different subnet to the wndr (192.168.1.x) then create a route on the WNDR for that subnet.

Basically at the moment when you try and go to 0.7 the router is sending you back internally which is why you cant find it.

I have no idea how to do this on dgteam though, someone else will have to jump in.

Hey Sp00n,

Yes The DG834N is connected to the WNDR3700 via the WAN port, Router is on 192.168.0.1 as usual and I set the the DG834N to 192.168.0.7.

So from what your saying Sp00n I need to have the DG834N on 192.168.1.7 ??

How would I go about creating a route?

Cheers

Right, ok, basically you need to have the 2 routers on different subnets as you need to create a route from the lan to the wan, for this you need to create a postroute in the iptable, the command I used for my ddwrt box is:

Code:
iptables -I POSTROUTING -t nat -o vlan1 -d 192.168.1.0/30 -j MASQUERADE
ip addr add 192.168.1.2/30 dev vlan1 brd +

This add a virtual IP to the vlan1 (wan) of 192.168.1.2 and sends that subnet traffic via vlan1 so when I access 192.168.1.x it knows where to go (i think i've got that right).

Now don't use this code as I don't know if dgteam runs the same as ddwrt but I would set the dg834 192.168.1.1 and have the vlan virtual ip as 192.168.1.2.

I would ask on the dgteam forum personally unless someone here knows of the right command to use, sorry I'm not more help!
