Sink the Bismarck is my favourite old war film. Watched it the other day for the hundredth time. Absolute classic.
I also like The Battle of The River Plate as well, but it is a bit corny tbh.
As mentioned previously, Kelly's Heroes is the perfect War/Western hybrid.

It's not a war film or a western but if you like gangster films then The Long Good Friday is superb.
Also, I highly recommend Das Boot... it's a fantastic film about a U-Boat crew from the German perspective. Subtitled but totally worth it.

To the OP, I second Bledd's recommendation for '12 Angry Men (1957)' - excellent film.
I would think ' High Noon (1952)' would be first on my list for classic westerns. Probably, also in top ten of my favourites.

Also, it's not a classic, but I'll throw in "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War":

...which as a war film, is epic, and will most likely not be included in any common list as it's a korean film.
Again, "High Noon" would be mandatory viewing in my opinion.
