Been looking around and i think you can get a decent e34 m5 for around £5k and insurance is strangely only around £2k.

Can people please quote running costs and other horror stories to stop me from buying one and stacking it jez style!

good luck insuring it :D

/edit, cheapest M5 on autotrader is £4k. Im not up on BMW's but £2k for an M5?

Sure its not a CAT D or something?

Fox will probably be along shortly to offer more advice.

Running costs are cheap, after all it's built with the reliability of the BMW,and tbcfh i can't think of a better car as a first. If you think about it really the extra power and the RWD will turn you into a very good driver. I would deffo go for it.

Peeps will say, rear wheel drive car will be a bad choice for 1st car and insurance, running cost etc.. will be high and its a stupid choice.

Personally I say knock yourself out my son. I'd be proud.

Repairs wont be cheap

Bit of both really :D

Id wait till you have a bit more driving experiance. Hell you could buy a nice (mondeo for instance) and insure it, for less than the insurance on the M5 alone.

er....like most people wait till hes a bit older?

No offense but remember Jez+MR2 turbo ;) thats why.

(think it was you Jez, apologies if not)

/Edit: I know after passing my test, i was in no way shape or form ready for that sort of power. I would have stacked it easily.

Now ive had 4 odd years of experiance, im a much better driver. I guess what im trying to say is common sense should prevail, and wanting an M5 as a first car isnt really common sense.

But good luck to the lad, if thats what he wants, go for it. I'll wait for the "Ive crashed" post :D

Also, is that 2.5k TPFT or FC?

Then you have to consider the ball of flames and fence post factor....

Just to clear things up, Sone have you processed this any further than OMG M5?

Third party, got a big payrise this year so not too woried about losing the money, just worried about injuring myself.

not really, but it was killing me to think of spending 2k for a fiesta + insurance when i can get a dream car for £7k ish?

I am of course joking (barring the mundano comment).

Sone- It will cost you a fortune to run, in petrol most likely, but definately in repairs. And most likely you will kill yourself. Get a few years driving something a bit more forgiving, and that doesnt mean buy something that is so slow it's painfull, you could buy something like a 323/325 e36. Lovely cars, regardless of fox's opinion ;) . And would definately keep you amused for a year or two.

Then why buy an M5 as a first car.

Your thread title, and worrying about injuring yourself, surely doesnt give anyone (yoruself included) much confidence in your driving ability if even you think your gonna stack it.

and £2.5k for TPFT only :o if thats what you want.

/edit - surely an M5 for £2k would be worth £2k for a reason. How much work does it need doing.

Yea its really not the right thing to do mate, it will cost you a fortune to run, your best off waiting and getting a proper M5 later on :)

If you have enough money get yourself a nice car for the same price as that old M5, it can still be RWD but just not as mental ;)

I think the best thing to do would be to get a nice 2k car (like a mondeo) for at least a year, and put the extra cash into a saving account and make interest on it:)

Then you can get an M5 in a year if you still want one, with 1 year NCB (we hope!) cheaper overall i think:)

Get some miles under your belt, get some driving experience in all sorts of conditions. And then do some advanced driving, and then you can start thinking about a powerful car. Don't be silly and bite off more than you can chew. Admittedly I don't know you and you could be very level headed and drive it very maturely and modestly - if that's the case, go for it... however for that price aren't you going to get a bit of a lemon? Why not buy something a bit newer for the money and get something funky when it's more affordable, and when you're less worried about stacking it? :)
