Please talk me out of killing myself, M5 as first car!

to be honest i never have liked bmws, slept on it and gone off the idea now. I only really wanted it to show off at work with. Could probably afford to run one but don't want to spend 50% plus of my spare money doing so.

Going to have look at more sensible 2.0 accord later
WTF was the point of this thread then? Should you get an M5 and then say you don't really like BM's?

Ha Ha show off at work, you going to stack every car you own. Cars are not for showing off.

Just skimmed this, indeed WTF was the point? Cars aren't about showing off, they are about getting something that you like and does what you want it to do. As with many things you have to be realistic.

what ever you end up with.. you are more than likely going to bump it or really stack it..

;)

id get fully comp insurance if i were you. :p

Thing is, the M5 would only have impressed real car nuts. To everyone else, an E34 is simply a very old BMW.

Why not go for something like a Mondeo? Looks nicer with a bodykit, handles better, and is thus more fun to drive.

Gotta disagre on that one Mr Fox. The Accord isa nice looking motor and the 2.0 is a nice goer. It also tends to come with higher level of kit and has rear disc brakes to boot. I had the 2.2iVtec with the leather seats, 16" wheels, autochanger, cruise, electric everything, air con and it was much superior to my old mondeo. A mate also has a 2.0 accord that he bought on 134k miles for 600 notes. It's cost him a new radiator and brakes all round for 10000 miles of motoring so far.

Get the accord, though I am certainly not slating the mondeo, just there are less about and the kit levels tend to be higher.

another point is that when it comes to changing car, you inevitably have to get something with more power, otherwise you will question your own sexual orientation.

youll have to go some to better an M5 lol

its a great idea but its a big ol car, youd look a bit silly at 17 getting in and out of one. the petrol costs will be immense. the learning curve will be immense, get it wrong and 340bhp will have you dead in no time.

i personally wouldnt trust a 17yo in a 340bhp car. most of them have trouble judging braking distances when travelling fast in a 1.1 fiesta. in a 340bhp big saloon it will be difficult without the experiance etc etc

i wouldnt recommend it, unless you have cash to burn

It costs £1000 for a main service on an M5?

E39 M5:

oil service - £300 approx (oil is almost £100 from dealer - its castrol TWS 10-60 which you cant buy in the shops)
inspection 1 - £700-£800
inspection 2 - £800-£850ish

dependant on dealer.

i dont like the car but wanted to show off at work?

i would not recommend a high power RWD car for a first car. its enough of a learning curve as it is! it will also mean you dont have much to look foward to as you are always on the look out for the new 'toy', by going in straight to an M5 kind of limits your choices :)

Ever had one that cost that? I always needed something extra. A £200 headlamp bulb or something. They were lovely people at the dealership and always gave me a lift back to work, but they were never inexpensive.

I'd say dont do the M5 mate, spend your money elsewhere, get a good handling car with average to good power while you get used to driving.

Im am in my first few months of driving and have a mondeo, you should go for something similar for a couple of years, thats my plan, then get myself something shiny and big when I come out of uni.

Gotta keep an eye on the insurance too.

Running costs are cheap, after all it's built with the reliability of the BMW,and tbcfh i can't think of a better car as a first.

Well, a work mate bought one recently as his second car and its not cheap to run by any stretch of the imagination. Seriously.

If you want it, go for it, yes.

However, it will cost a small fortune to fix when it goes wrong, and it will go wrong. I use a german car specialist to have my cars repaired, and i know him extremely well. His opinion of the e34 is far from positive. He works on them yes, but they are not 'BMW' reliable as you might think.

Great cars, but they come at a price.

Ohh, and the guy who bought his M5 at work... is till working on it to this day, about 8 months after, not cheap either.
