Please talk some sense in to me!

Current rig is 5900X, 3080.
I've got a 4080 Super arriving today.

My daughter has shown an interest in her first PC. It will likely be Sims, Fortnite, Minecraft etc. Though she does enjoy Horizon, Last of Us etc on PS5. So she may or may not get into other games on the pc.
I have a 1080p 120hz monitor, case, keyboard etc to get her going.

Now I'm torn between a few choices. Do I

A. Buy a 7800X3D, mobo and DDR5 for myself. Around £600.
Then just give her my old rig.

B. Spend £300 on a 5600X, mobo and ram for around £300.
B.1 Give her my 3080
B.2 Sell my 3080, buy something used for her, though zero idea what to go for.

C. You have a better idea / spec to buy her.

Im well aware my current rig isn't bad, and is completely overkill for a 12 year old.
But I'm thinking price wise, for £300 I get a new build (stolen girl math!)
Or I try and sell my 3080 for who knows what, then buy a lesser gpu used for her, again, who's knows how much and what.

I have zero idea on suitable parts for her. Part of me is just thinking giving her mine is easy, no hassle of poeccing hers, buying or selling used parts etc.

Let's hear some opinions on what I should do. And on some potential specs I could build for sensible money.

Why?

You get an upgrade and you keep a great card, which you could also steal for a backup if your 4080 has to be RMA or whatever. Selling it and buying her a replacement is likely to get you less performance for the money, though I suppose you gain a warranty (if new) and if buying used you'd have an unknown history (potentially mining).

You could also get something cheaper, like a 7500F or 7600, just to move you onto the newer platform and then upgrade the CPU later when you need it, that's assuming you don't need the cores for productivity.

Buy yourself a b650 and 7600, it'll still be an upgrade for gaming at similar performance to a 5800X3D. Upgrade the chip to a 8700X3D or whatever in a year or two if you feel the need.

If I'm honest, the faff of trying to sell stuff (or buying used) puts me off a bit. I'm not dead against it. I sold my last rig, but would have given it to her if she had shown interest.

That's fair, I mentioned the 5700X3D as it can be had for £210-220 at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if you got more than that for your 5900X assuming you can be bothered, so you'd not need to buy second hand at least.

Even if you grab a 5700X you'll need a decent mobo (VRM's)to run the 5900X for her and some DDR4 so you're looking £400 to £450.
Might as well get youself an upgrade, though I agree with the above, a decent b650 + R5 7600 + DDR5 gets you equal or better to the 5800X3D at a similar cost.

You can then upgrade later to 8xxx 3D on AM5 if you fee the need.

The EVGA 3080 is a nice card with known history as should mean you don't need to upgrade her PC for years..... well unless you fall into the 4k monitor trap.

Yeah I think keeping 5900X is the easiest, as I won't even have to swap cases. I'll buy myself something with a bit better flow, and give her my Fractal R6.

This started out as 'I might build a new pc when 50xx comes out' to I now am likely building a new pc

Nobody has suggested buying an inferior build.

To clarify my point:

Nobody has suggested buying another AM4 system, one person (aka me) has suggested giving her your current but swapping the CPU out for something better at gaming than the 5900X. As I mentioned earlier, you can buy a 5700X3D for £210-220, you could probably sell the 5900X for £240-250. Yes it's a bit of a faff, but it would be a better gaming rig for her at no extra cost.

Treat yourself to an AM5 setup either way, but the 7600 is an excellent gaming chip if you don't want to fork out for a 7800X3D and will still be a substantial upgrade in some scenarios over what you have.

I'm getting decent fps in most games I play @1440. So she will be fine I'm sure.

A 27 inch 1440p with 180hz
Can be had for around £220--230
To me anyway that's a pretty decent price

And yeah I think a 5900x would suffice
I have a 5950x and never considered swapping it
For a x3d cpu
When you're already getting decent fps
Can't see the point for a few fps more
And lose performance in non gaming apps
Which hopefully she will also use the pc for

If you have the money, then sure, get the 7800X3D. It is a decent step up on the 5900X and a nice pairing for your 4080 Super.

I just think that getting something like a 7600 or 7500F (mildly faster than the 5900X in games) and putting yourself on a new platform is better than buying her an AM4 system which is only a sidegrade on what you already own.

You...get the b650 mobo, ddr5 ram and the 7800x3d...you're running a 4080super on it. It's actually a fast gpu that'll make use of it. Enjoy!

if it's any help I know what you're going through, i promised (and I know he was 16) that if he did well in his gcse's he could have my pc....he's now rocking a corsair 5000x case, B550e-e, 5800x, 32gb ram, 9 ql120 fans, rm1000x and a 3080fe...
I drowned my sorrows by buying a b650e-e, 7800x3d and 011d evo etc....though using a 3070tife as had that stored away for a present for my son, who in his gratitude, refused to swap it for my 3080fe (too smart for his own good arguing the points of the deal)
I did become top Dad for awhile though

I don't regret it as my son uses the pc all the time, so really it'll come down to how much your daughter will use it

...as a guide, testing warzone, my gpu was at 99% and the 7800x3d was 23%, so really you need a decent gpu to make the most of the 7800x3d, which you have..if you were rocking a 4070 I's say get the 7600...I'm just trying to cling on for the next generation and actually get some use out of the 3070ti. Only thing you might want to do (if you have the patience) is wait for computex and amd should announce the 9000 series cpu's...then you should have a better understanding of what's coming

Im just speccing my new one now.
Im sure she will use it for more than gaming, will probably be helpful with school stuff. Im not sure she has any concept of how good her new one will be, hoping to get her to help me build mine / clean hers, maybe customise some lighting or something for her.
