I am going to order a 1*x*HP Proliant DL145 Rack*Server G2 or something with a similar spec ( budget £50) next week, but what os should I use, and how would I do what I want to do? Here's what I am planning

  • Minecraft server
  • File access for wireless connections
  • Ability to access and download files from out of the network
  • downloading freeware and then sending it too wireless computers on the same network

Thanks all

What exactly do you mean by "downloading freeware and then sending it too (sic) wireless computers..."

Because so far all I can see that you actually need is Minecraft and whatever OS you have a license for that will run Minecraft, assuming you mean the "old" minecraft, then Ubuntu will do fine.

Would I be better to summarise that you really require a Minecraft server which can also download from HTTP/Torrents/Usenet and then make its Download folder available to anyone else connected to the same network?

If so you're laughing, you just need Linux (Ubuntu is a good start). The requirements for downloading / sharing are so minimal that you might as well just ensure your server is sufficient for the size of Minecraft world you'll be hosting.
