please tell me I haven't made a horrible mistake with this spec!

I once bought a cheap PSU and all the reviews said it was absolutely silent and that you could barely hear it. I can only conclude that these reviewers must have been either deaf or retarded. It sounded like a bleeding hoover.

The PSU is quiet according to the site reviews. They might be mainly positive but why would people mention that they're quiet if they're not?
If you bothered to learn things you would notice that near 99% percent of comments in webshops are made by clueless people who wouldn't know the **** even when stepping on it.
And many people probably wouldn't notice even stick of dynamite going off next to ear considering fan, chassis and component selections.

Unless it blows up my motherboard lol
Don't worry, hard drives and their contents are equally much at stake.

If budget is that tight get Antec Basic 350W... at least it's made by FSP which does decent budget PSUs instead of being some only gods know how much overrated El Cheapo of Bling brand.
EarthWatts 380W would be next step ahead.

Hiper also make some good power supplies, especially the more recent ones.
Check out jonnnyguru if you don't believe me.
As far as i'm aware it was only really the original type r modular power supply that was the problem. At one time this was the most popular power supply on this site so the failure rate would be higher because of the popularity of the product.

It's not as if he is buying a no name brand. It may actually be a very good power supply, i've read no reviews of it so i don't know.

Give the guy a break.

Well he asked for opinions, and we're giving them! :)

Well, I've got everything put together now... couple of things:

- PSU is running fine - literally silent, can't hear anything so i'm pretty pleased with it so far... time will tell though I guess!

- the motherboard I bought isn't compatible with the cpu. It needs a bios update so that it can properly recognise the e8600. It doesn't matter too much except it errors with a "cpu too hot" (108C according to the bios!) and tells me that it won't perform at maximum speed until i've got the latest bios.

the HSF I bought is SO much quieter than the Intel HSF it's untrue. I didn't think there'd be all that much difference after what everyone said on here but its probably as close to silent as you can get!

Overall, I'm very pleased with it - it runs very fast and VERY quiet. Once Asus release a new bios everything will be perfect. Until then I have to ignore the 'out of date bios' error and disable the heat sensor.

Exactly, the latest Hiper's have had awesome reviews from people who know thier stuff and push PSU's to the limit.

Hiper are paying dearly for the Type R 580W.

That said, i would not have put a £17 PSU in a modern system featuring quality components.

I'm surprised a G35 chipset board needs a BIOS update to run 45nm chips. Aren't they just the microATX equivalent to P35?

This reminds me of the time I swapped my rig into a new case last year and upgraded some bits. I happened to be in a local PC shop looking for 100 blank DVDs, and asked about their PSUs for my new high spec rig. I wanted to step up from my 300w OEM to something around 500w, preferably modular. Their reply?

"Na, don't bother with a cruddy 500 watter. Here..." *thuds box onto the counter* "This 1 KW psu is all you need. £15 please" :D

I ran away, but not before laughing in his face :p He really didn't understand why I didn't want a £15 PSU in a high end system. The killer was his parting comment:

"We use these in ALL our shop-built systems". hahaha

I can run Vista Aero and watch 1080p .mkv's on my lowly T5200 (1.60GHz) with Intel 945GM Integrated Graphics.

I'm sure he'll be fine.

p.s. CoreAVC

+1

I reviewed three Hiper PSUs last year, and they were all great. Got their 850w model running my PC now, and it's fine.

What are you going to be doing with it? Integrated graphics is pretty bad even for video watching and the like

I'm using it solely for electronic music production. I literally ONLY have a very stripped down XP install, Steinberg Cubase SX, Ableton Live and a bunch of plugins installed. The one thing I need is a fast cpu and literally nothing else. A fast video card is the least important thing in a setup like this - the worse, the better!

The PSU is running absolutely perfectly... I am more than happy with it... very surprised. Only time will tell if it's a system destroyer!
