Looking at trying something a little different in the world of plectrums. Primary needs are for lead - not shredding, for jazz/blues and post-rock styles.

I normally use:
1.0mm Tortex Standard (Blue)
1.14mm Delrin 500 (Light Pink)

I find the Delrins suit me great; soft attack, grippy and doesn't wear down, but I've just lost my last. I like the Tortex when I'm after a harder-edged and scrappy sound and find around 1mm, and that shape, the most versatile.

Got a Stubby (how much difference between the small/med/big?) on the list as I quite liked it the last time I used it (for bass), and the Ultex look quite interesting too.

Considering I've rarely swayed away from Jim Dunlop picks, are there any hidden treasures from other brands worth checking out? How do you pick yours? ;)

C'mon Engerland!

I use Ibanez ( ) Paul Gilbert signature picks. Not because I like to 'shred' (cringes at the word) but because they're an awesome shape.

If you like the tiny stubbies AND regular shaped 1mm picks then these are a fantastic in-between. They're 1mm and a perfect shape for me. For years i've been switching back and forth with picks and I've finally found at least one piece of guitar gear that I can't see wanting to change for a long while :D 50p a pop though :( £10 for 20 and they last about 2-3months, I wish they'd invent some better plasticy material though as the tips wear off pretty quick.

either Tortex teardrop or Tortex standard (green, think its 0.7mm)

i find i can get pinch harmonics a lot easier with the Teardrop shaped ones as there is less pick to get in the way!

I find that using a thicker plectrum creates a duller, deeper sound, kinda like using your fingers (bass). Whereas thinner plectrums create 'twangy', clearer sounds that you here in modern pop punk/emo.

I use Jim Dunlop 3.0mm stubby for my bass, and 0.88mm for my guitar. :)

Yeah I used my mates 0.9mm guitar pick for my bass when we had band practice last cause I forgot all my bass picks. I actually quite liked the tone I got from it.

It's really down to what you find comfortable, you can't say bass is meant to be played with fingers, because it comes down to personal choice. I use a pick the majority of the time, but I do like to use my fingers just to keep things fresh, hell I even like 'poppin n' slappin'!

Ooh dear. One of my first picks was one of these. Sounded like a string was going to snap each time you picked - was like strumming with a stanley knife.
