Plex Client for Mac/ OSX?

Hi

I am struggling to find a decent plex client for OSX.

The official one seems to be set up for HTPC rather than a point- click- type interface. I seem to struggle to get VLC working reliably.

Any other suggestions for a decent client welcome.

The Plex client for OSX is the Plex client for OSX?

You can also playback through the Plex web interface but that is likely to have it's own issues as it will be transcoding all of the time.

Other than that I don't tend to have any issues using VLC for just straight playback with the defaults.
 
I was thinking of a third party client. I also struggle to get vlc to connect to the plex server. Is this a known issue? (My sony tv is fine btw)
 
Given that their is an official client which is pretty comprehensive I doubt that there are any real third party clients. Getting things like VLC to talk to Plex is no doubt using its DLNA capabilities. You could try looking at the DLNA profiles which the Plex server provides and see what software that points you at.

It does seem though that you are trying to do something which is away from what Plex offers. Plex, like XMBC, is a supposed to be a rich playback environment as opposed to something like VLC, or MPlayer, which are more right-click a file, select open types of players ...

You could try asking the Plex forums too ...
 
The main thing is that the Plex client is horrible from a usability perspective on a laptop - mainly because you are forced to use the keyboard to navigate around it, and cannot use the mouse. For me, that is the main issue really.
 
I find the web UI doesn't always stream well. I don't know why... I think it is a common issue though.

CrispyXUK, yes, sure I could do that, but I just wanted to understand I could do to avoid having to do that.... Sounds like not an awful lot apart from use the Plex Client!

I understand what you're after, it's not even suited to run windowed as you can't point and click. Perhaps try XBMC?
 
Erm XMBC is basically equivalent to Plex in this case?

I do seem to remember that there used to be an option buried in the Plex client setting to enable mouse support .... no idea if it is still there though.

edit: looking I can't see an option in the current version. Although it's not difficult to control it using the keyboard anyway.

Yes to a degree, but I thought you were after a better client on OSX and XBMC has a richer feature set and better flexibility than Plex Clients simple functionality?
