Plex client which supports DTS-HD

I'm going to install CentOS 7 and put PHS and PHT on that tonight, I don't think my NAS is powerful enough to transcode more than 1 1080p stream.

PHT doesn't require Transcoding. Its a plex client so plays everything you throw at it

I know, but other devices around the house will. If my NAS is busy unpacking nzb articles in sab then that may impact transcoding to a rasplex device or mobile phone etc. An i3 NUC should be powerful enough to transcode.

Rasplex should not require Transcoding either that is a plex client also any plex clients will not require a transcode they all pass any formats you throw at them Rasplex Home theatre and plexbmc are all clients and do not need transcoding

If you got plex clients all around the house then the NAS will be fine even if your films are 1080p everything will direct play without a transcode so your NAS will not have to do no work within the home network if your playing via your phone or tablet then it may require it but even some of the latest tablets exc are 1080p and won't need much transcoding Audio doesn't require much CPU power to transcode. If your playing a high bitrate 1080p film on a 720p tv then that will require high CPU usage

Well I gave up and put Windows 10 on the NUC and Plex Home Theater runs perfectly. It crashed once when fast forwarding, but I think that was a one off. Once I mucked about with the audio settings I got DTS HD and MA pass through to the amp. Very impressed with the UI!

Also put it on a Pi B in the kitchen, again works well but wireless buffering is letting it down. I may get a powerline to it somehow.

So far I'm happy I made the switch.

Yes plex is excellent. Did you know you can put your own home theatre skins on also? Powerline will work great or you can transcoide to a lower MB which will change the quality of the stream but once again wont require much of a Transcode for that though. Anyway you can always get a plex pass and that gives you other benefits of free android app and Trailers for movies and add friends to your plex. Here is a link for the PHT skins Black Edition is suppose to be really good. But take your pic. You can put a skin on the Pi also aswell as PHT

I have an android box connected to our TV in the living room im thinking on using that for PLEXbmc but im not a big fan for plex for android. But there is a skin on the new jarvis for SPMC that i like so might stick a External HDD into me router and network share to that skin for my movies and music exc. But i like plex also which i have the server and PHT on my main HTPC

Will RasPlex play DTS HD and Master Audio? If so I may consider using it to replace the NUC and use that for something else, or use it to but more Pi's.

It should do yes Rasplex is part of the old Home theatre. And uses the port that home theatre does. Plex stopped updating home theatre and now use the new plex media player which is currently only for plex pass users. Head over to plex the devs will help you on any questions you have reguarding updates and settings exc

Cheers, I may try the Pi 3 out and see what it's like as a main device compared to the NUC. Could then use the NUC for something else or sell it.

The Pi3 can't pass through HD audio due to the HDMI chipset, rasplex decodes it and passes it as PCM to the amp instead which assuming it is decoded properly should should identical to the amp decoding the audio. I still prefer the amp decoding it so would stick to a NUC.
