Good afternoon all,

Im looking to get some sort of plex server running so the kids dont ruin their and my dvds. Currently they are stored on an 2.5" external HD.

Im also trying to do this on a budget :D - after lots of reading im still getting confused as to how much power the plex server will need.

I have a RPI3 and have read i the guide for pms - its beyond me so i dont think thats an option.

How about something like this : http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=NanoPC&U=en-us0000006

with an external HD plugged in?

It really has to be plex as it has to be child and wife friendly and our TV has plex built in.

There is nothing ripped in very high quali8ty so shouldnt need much power (all watched on a single source locally so no transcoding i believe?)

Thanks
ANdy

Several things to consider;

How many simultaneous requests are you planning (one for each kid in their bedrooms, plus one livingroom + one in your bedroom )

If its just DVD quality then an atom processor should be ok for a single request but may be challanged by multiple players requesting different files /videos simultaneously, but imo never rely on USB because I always found it to power down and not always power back up on request - something that just isnt possible with an internal drive.

Again you probably wont get any issues with wifi if its only DVD sourced, but if you even consider Blu Rays as a source you will need to go with a full wired connection in my experience (mainly due to the hi def soundtracks on br's which use up a lot of data).

I have a 27TB Unraid server with 16GB ram and an i5 but mainly because of the blu ray rips - would be totally over the top for DVD images/rips

If its just going to be one telly accessing the server that kind of source should be reasonable (others may have a different experience of USB drives in this scenario)

Thanks, all makes sense - my post wasnt very clear - sorry.

Single source streaming - all locally and hardwired.

Dont think there will be any 1080p all 700ish meg dvd rips.

Damn, i thought id cracked it with an external drive - everyone seems to make do with them on RPi3s.

Thanks Frank!

Get onto the Members Market on here and get yourself a HP Microserver, I now have a Gen8, but before hand I had a N45L server, it ran everything 100%, even 4K onto my LG TV using a third party app called Xplay, official app is also available.

I had synology installed onto it (find the instructions within the server forum) and you can install the plex server straight onto it.

A couple of guys in my work even stream onto their home TV's from my server now that I have a 20meg upload.

Really really easy to first install and then update. I even took my original boot drive when I swapped servers and placed it straight into my new gen 8, updated it and then booted into the server. Worked first time, and kept all my settings/listings etc.

Honestly mate, it is the best way to go, PI is a bit underpowered. This way you can have 3 or 4 streams going on at the same time, as long as your home network is up to it!

Pretty sure it is!

The law brought in last October made it legal to make back-ups for personal use but it always remained an offence to share those copies with friends or family or to sell on that music or data.

From your source!

Well if they are your own home made DVDs then it is fine.

sharing any original media ( even if its blank dvds with dodgy tv / copies) with friends has always been an offence here, whether you will actually get arrested / prosecuted is another matter entirely.

Some territories its not, which is why Plex have it in their software, but here its definitely not legal
