Plextor M5S Issue !!

Hi all,

I have recently bought Plextor M5S 128 Gb SSD which I have plugged into the Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard. The Plextor replaced an old OCZ Vertex 2 60 Gb which I have had for around 3 years. I had no issues with vertex whatsoever but I changed it as the drive became to small fro all my programs and system.

So I set up the new ssd by plugging it into the SATA 3 port on my Mobo and installed the Windows 7 but during the installation and from the beginning the drive behave strangely, namely the installation of the system froze few times so I had to restart the computer. After around 5- 10 restarts I managed to install windows on the drive. Once finished that I also tried to install all the system updates and the same issue of freezing during installation occurred. So again I had to restart machine few times in order to successfully install them all. But this have not solved the problem as during drivers and program installation the same thing was happening. I researched the issue online and found that it could be caused by bad drive.

SO I installed the HDTune to check the system and surprisingly the new (2 days old drive) has some issues already. The (C7 Interface CRC Error Count) is 165 and says "attention". This is worrying me as I mentioned the drive literally is 2 days old and everything what I managed to do was install system, system updates and few programs I use on daily basis.

For comparison I also checked all my storage drives (have 2 of these) and they all seem fine no issues whatsoever. I also checked an old vertex 2 before I received the New SSD and the driver after 3 years of solid work is also fine, no issues at all in the HDTune.

I looked into many threads similar to mine online but everything what guys said was the issue either with mobo, cable or drive itself. But my old vertex and additional two drives work fine on my mobo so I ruled it out. I checked the cables and again I used the same sata cable for the new SSD that I used for an old so I also ruled this out. However The ASUS P8P67 pro has 4 sata 3 ports two which are controlled by marvel and two which are controlled by intel. I had my old vertex plugged into the intel sata 3 and worked fine. I realised that I plugged the new ssd to the one of the sata 3 ports controlled by marvel and that seems to be an issue. I also forgot to mention that once I managed to install windows, after few normal restarts (for program and drivers installation purposes) the blue screen was appearing and I had an issue with missing windows system files which render system useless as it would not boot (ssd drive plugged into sata 3 controlled by marvel). This was strange as I have just installed the new fresh system on the drive. I then switched the drive back to the one of the intel's sata 3 ports and surprisingly windows booted in and just works fine... even quiet fast comparing to previous experience.

SO sorry for such long essay but I though laying out the issue properly will avoid many unnecessary questions.

SO Does anyone had similar issue or problem related the sata 3 ports or the ssd drive on the ASUS P8P67 pro motherboard?? Does it mean that my sata 3 marvel ports are broken or is it the drvier issue ? (I installed drivers supplied with mobo which are windows 7 ready)
And Lastly should I worry abut the Interface CRC Error Count ?? Currently the count is 165 and does not rise (I have read that if it does not rise that it should be fine) is it true??

Will be Glad for any help
Thanks

id just put it down to being on the marvell ports, you might have a second option in the bios to set the marvell ports to ahci aswell

usually there's one for intel and another for marvell

I wouldn't worry about the crc count aslong as the drives working as it should, its probably a software error

urgh yeah marvell controllers I've had these problems with the 512gb version of the drive but on intel controllers like the dell pcs they were built for they work fine. You know that's basically a dell oem drive.

OK, good to hear that it is not a major issue... as I was worrying little a bit.

I will check the BIOS settings and see if I can set it to ACHI. I am sure I have ACHI enabled (but not sure if its for all the ports or just intel as you suggest).
Yeah the drvie is working fine on the intel port right now, no issues at all so I will keep it there. The count also does not increases so I guess that's good sign.

Bemaniac - So how did you fix it? Did you just plugged your drive to intel port and left it there or Have you fixed marvel ports?

Thanks Guys for help

CRC Error Count Issue With Second Plextor

Hi,

Bane - thanks for the tip btw i did so and my ssd both of them have current firmware.

I did not want to start new thread so I will use this one for my another plextor ssd which again is having an issue. I bought this one recently with previous one, however i used it only for two days as i have not had to installs system on it.

The ssd in question is plugged into the Dell Precision M4700 into its main drive bay while the stock drive is in the hdd caddy in the optical drive bay. The issue is exactly the same as with the previous ssd. The Interface CRC Error Count is rising everytime i restart the computer either by 1 or 3 units... or randomly when i switch it off...
Also interesting fact is that the drvie has already 22 unsafe shutdowns... which is very weird as i always restart or switch it off through the start and right button... so I have not idea where it came from (and it rises...randomly while the crc rises as well...)

So what i did I have checked the drive with the, the the sata port in the laptop, i used gently some compressed air to clean both connection, i also plugged it my old vertex 2 into the laptop to check the if the problem lies on the laptop side or on the drive side. It turns out that the vertex 2 is fine (at least to my knowledge..) so i guess it is the drive fault. The strange thing i also noticed is the difference between life times writes between the plextor and the vertex. The vertex value is much less about the half the plextro value while the vertex is around 3 years old and plextor 2 days only (in use)....

I uploaded
the hd tune results and crystaldiskinfo for both drives. Could you guys tell me please whether is there a problem with the drive or my laptop sata port.. as I am totally confused after having problems with two brand new plextros... not ideal start with the brand...

Small update - the first ssd is working fine.. the crc error count have not rose since the sata port switch .

The lins to the HD Tune and Crystaldiskinfo:

As CrystalDisk doesn't list a value for C7 for the Plextor, could it be HD Tune Pro is incorrectly reporting?

I would contact Plextor support using web-form assistant.

Looking at their product page they use CrystalDisk for the benchmark pictures.

Thanks "Bane" for reply

Well I read that HdTune might report incorectly hence i Installed crystaldiskinfo which lists (Ultra CRC Error Count).I noticed that (Ultra CRC Error Count) is rising accordingly with rise in the HDTune so i guess it is indicating the same problem.

On top of that i checked my old standard hdd i had plugged into the main laptop bay (the same i plugged the ssd into) and the CRC Error Count on the hdd is fine, indicating "0" value which means it is not the problem with the sata port or cable??
