Recently moved into Grandparents (cheaper as student) ... Smeggin' problem is there is one socket in my room ! - (Can't add more)

At the minute i have on that socket; PC, monitor, Speakers, Modem, Router.

And have took an extention from back room to power Tv an Xbox - when needed.

An old friend once ran 11 devices off one socket (then another after first one burnt out after a year), am not willing to take the risk of that many. however... bought a surge protector, so reckon it be ok running all of the above?
only really PC Monitor TV an Xbox the power Suckers!

anyone else ran mass amounts from one plug?

It'll be fine! Sometimes my speakers 'surge' a bit when I turn certain things on but it's all cool :p

I run off two sockets the following.

42" Plasma
Xbox 360
Virgin V+
PS3
iMac
Laptop Charger
Lamps
AV Kit
Speakers and then whatever else is needed.

Been ten months now and I've not died in a horrible electrical fire.

Get a decent 8-gang surge protector and you should be alright.

I used to recommend the belkin range, but I can't any more. My second unit in 3 years has failed, I'm not very happy about it. In fact, I've yet to find a belkin product that wasn't poorly built and incredibly overpriced, shame.

You might want to try APC.

My mum runs the following from two plugs:

PC, Monitor, Speakers, modem, printer, stereo, scanner.

There are multi plug adaptors plugged into multi point adpators, it's a right mess, next time I go over I might take one of my spare extension chords.

downstairs we have on 2 sockets
32"LCD
360
virgin box
theater system
modem
router
wii

in my room, I've got an 8 way splitter for
PC
Monitor
theater system
lights
guitar amp
Bass POD

and never had any problems, obviously not overloaded anything, but always wary I'll start a fire lol

Bought this yesterday from a common cataloge...

so wanting to put on it:
PC
Monitor
router
modem
Speakers
LCD TV (40")
Xbox

(possably guitar amp now and then)

All one socket!
Sleep with smoke mask first few nights!

Number of plugs isn't a problem (as long as you're sensible with the extension leads).

It's wattage that is important, you should never draw more than 13amp (3.1k) per socket.
So you could have 100x mobile phone chargers (at 30 watts), or just a single 3kw heater/kettle.

If in doubt work out the wattage of the appliances (they or their chargers should note the maximum current usage), then allow a bit of a margin on top :)

Bang on, I've plugged over 30 plugs into a single socket with no problems, as they are all low powered devices. If I were to plug 2 kettles into a single socket and turn them on at the same time, I would pop the MCB, they normally trip at 20A (5Kw).

3kw is the safe limit to stick too, and you've got to have a pretty powerful speaker system to exceed that, tho it is possible.... Just try using a Void Infinite 8 amp with a 2 ohm load...

so i have about 3000watt to play with? =]

Al start adding....

Pc - 250 - 300max (according to zalman reader)
router and modem - Minimal
Monitor - 50w (http://www.samsung.com/sg/consumer/...lcdmonitor&model_cd=LS22MEVSFV/XSS&fullspec=F)
Speakers - 140watt (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/211&cl=gb,en)
LCD Tv - 190watts Operational
Xbox - ???? - anyone know or hazard a guess?!
Ikea lamp :) - Minimal (energy bulbs)

So without the Xbox where looking around - 700watt ??
:D

Feeling like am missing a point somewhere though... see am lost at the:

I wouldn't worry, I run:

21'' CRT TV.
24'' LCd.
19'' LCD.
Gaming pc.
Z5500 speakers.
Various adaptors/chargers.
Alarm clock.

off 1 socket.

Until 2.5 kW there's nothing to worry about, unless you want to run 2 electric ovens + a hoover + a fridge + whatever XXXX watt equipment from it, I wouldn't worry.
Running all that stuff is far less dangerous than running ONE Electric 2500w heater from a plug...

Yep, 3000 watt from a single socket, if you need more than 3000w then things get a little complicated but I don't think you'll be needing more than 3000W unless you've got some crazy speaker system,

Xbox will use around as much as a PC, they're pretty similar things after all... The router will probably use around 20w-30w.

If you think about it, all the sockets in one room are all connected to the same cabling anyways. The only limiting factor is the plug & extension lead cabling.

1 wall socket =

2 lamps
32" tv
20"monitor
19"monitor
z5500s
my pc
gfs pc
bluray player
xbox 360
sky+ box
router
dell printer
husky fridge
phone charger
xbox 360 battery charger
fish tank filter

Assuming that one socket is on the ring final circuit then it will be protected at the consumer unit (fuse box) by a 30 or 32a device (mcb, rcd etc.) meaning that circuit will trip if the draw taken out of the whole circuit exceeds 30/32a (higher in reality) so if you're going to start drawing the full 13a then that only leaves @17-20a for the rest of the ring but as long as there's not much else powered at the same time then it won't be a problem what you've got on there.
The fuse in that surge protector should blow if you have too much draw on it anyway:)

I'm running 20+ things off 2 sockets at the moment, including:

  • Desktop PC (550w)
  • 19" TFT monitor
  • 19" TFT monitor II
  • 42" plasma
  • Router
  • Aquarium pump
  • Aquarium light
  • Aquarium heater
  • 5.1 speaker system
  • 7.1 speaker system
  • USB dock
  • Desk lamp
  • Mouse charger
  • Phone charger
  • Printer
  • Xbox 360
  • Wireless phone
  • Vonage box
  • Laptop
  • Video camera charger
  • Digital camera charger
  • TV signal booster

..and never had any problems! :p. Within that there's about 5 multiblocks as all off my gadgets are located at the complete opposite corner to the only sockets in the room, so everything's daisy chained like mad.

To save starting a new thread, if you have a friend who has around 6kw of stuff to power in a single room, is it best to try and split the load between ring circuits?

He;s a mobile DJ who has around 3kw of lights, and also around 3kw of soundsystem to power... and it can be a pain to try and power it all.

The only thing I don't know how to do is determine is if 2 wall sockets are on the same ring, it's there some sort of plug tester type device avaliable?
