I want to hook up pihole on my local network, but can't find the dns settings for the life of me! A quick google seems to confirm that you can't use custom dns servers :/

I also get no end of trouble trying to set up a google chrome cast which I gave up on in the end!

Now I'm wondering if I would be better off moving to a 3rd party router? I'm quite new to fibre so I have no idea what the options are and how much I would have to spend for the functionality that I require?

Cheers

does it mean you cannot change the routers DNS or the DNS it hands out to clients? Unless you have a pile of devices just set manual IP's / DNS on them?

not sure on the differences mate? basically no option and you are forced to use dns servers of plusnets choice. Its easy enough to set up on windows but a bit of a pain to set up on all the mobiles and tablets around the house - i guess that is an option though cos once its done its done I suppose

Disable DHCP on the router and use pi-hole as the dhcp server?
didn't know this was possible :) Having a quick google it looks like it can be done via the GUI, this would then mean that the pi would hand out ip address and handle all the devices dns queries?

that sounds good mate, dont think I need to worry to much about static. i guess the best way to do it is to assign on the devices themselves in a certain range then only allow the dhcp server to hand out another range?

How reliable have you found pihole in general - I have only tested breifly but seems ok so far?

Been using it for a few months now, absolutely fine, should be as reliable as any other DNS service :)

cheers dude :) no crashes or anything then thats good news. I just fear setting it up and getting frantic phone calls from the mrs while im at work.... saying things like "the internet doesnt work"! lol

This is a classic problem with the BT HH5 so might also apply to the Plusnet Hub (they're related AFAIK):

Thanks Joey, although the plusnet hub doesn't have the option to turn off the 'smart setup' feature, it prompted me to go looking a little deeper. Incase anyone comes across this thread in future, the issues were with older chromecast firmware - of course which you can't easily update with it crashing your router.

The following fix worked for me :)

1. set my phone up as a wireless hotspot
2. reset my CCA (held down button till LED stopped flashing and turned solid)
3. ran Home app to set-up CCA from a tablet, connected it to the phone hotspot
4. in the CCA settings in Home app on the tablet, opted into the Preview
5. waited 30mins for firmware to download to CCA
6. re-booted CCA from the settings menu inside Home app (still on tablet)
7. checked that firmware had been updated from within settings of CCA (from tablet) (broken: 1.21.74816, preview (working): 1.22.77272)
8. from the CCA's settings menu in the Home app on the tablet told the CCA to factory reset
9. switched tablet back from being connected to the phone hotspot to using HH5 network
10. re-ran the setup to connect CCA to HH5 network
