I'm a bit untechy with stuff like Modems and Routers, so take that into account ta

My first FTTC internet was with BT ( 40 mb DL tops in my area, got 39 ish )

Not a bad service until you need to call CS. 99 out of 100 , i couldn't understand the person on the phone, and you can only ask , repeat please , so many times before you start to hear their own frustration along with your own.

I moved to PLusnet and within a few months, noticed a slight drop in performance. Turn off router, turn on again. Or reset. Dropouts too . Same remedy

Eventually i phoned PN and spoke to someone and they decided to send another router of the same model, a Hub Zero.

Some months later i phone again, this was last week, and they decide to send me a Hub 1, which i assume all the knowledgeable people here will know that it does away with the Open Reach Modem.

This didnt really make much difference. I'm about 4 months away from end of contract.

I did a broadband speed checker test on my laptop, on WiFi , router in the next room next to Desktop PC

DL speed 28.3 mbs Ping 684 ms

Desktop 10 seconds later

DL speed 41.6 mbs Ping 2746 ms

Strangely, i've not had 41.6 for many many months, and suddenly when i finally want to make a thread here, i get slightly over my max

41.6 is not typical for the Desktop

I'm even surprised because of the time of day. People are returning home from work and like a tea break during Eastenders commercials , on go the PC's so i figured i'd get lower on the Desktop.

The laptop doesn't care about the time of day, its bad all the time.

Now to my point . Would i be better getting a much better combined router modem

I still have the Open Reach Modem on the wall. Its only unplugged, so would a router only, that connects to the OR modem be a better bet than a combined job

I was thinking becuase i've read good things about Billion routers, that one of those might be the way to go. I think i might have a hard time setting it up, due to my lack of knowledge

Cheers all

There's nothing particularly bad about the Hub One. It's basically a rebadged BT HH5.

Avoid connecting a disconnecting the router unless you really need to. Do it too much and it'll be recognised as a fault and they'll drop the speed to compensate. It can take a long time for the speed to recover (weeks). If it's a new router plug it in and leave it alone until it has chance to settle down.

How fast is the wireless in the laptop supposed to be? It could just be a low end model that's not going to perform whatever wireless router you use.

Plusnet also advise not turn it off and on too much and as i've had the thing for only a couple of days now, it hasnt been.

The laptop is as follows. Reasonable spec, i assume. Nothing outrageous

Its a Thinkpad with Win 8.1 , 12gb ram, Intel i-5 4200m 2.5ghz, crucial 250gb SSD
