My brother has seen a pre-built pc he likes the look of for £1099, some of you will know which one i mean from the price and the case in the spec below.

Anyway i reckon i can built a similar/identical one for less; is there anything i could do to the following to make it better for equal money or cheaper but just as powerful?

Did you know you've spec'd the Prodigy M and an ITX board?

Not sure if it was intentional, I know there the same size but surely you might as well use a mATX board with the Prodigy M case?

Was just going off the specs of the pre-build machine - the spec i posted is almost like for like.

I'm not a fan of the layout in the mATX Prodigy to be honest.

A modular PSU will make your life much easier in a small chassis which is why I used the Seasonic G series (bargain whilst on offer). When using mini-itx mobos you have to be careful the cooler doesnt overhang the PCI-E slot so that's why I used the CLC cooler.

A bit, maybe 4Ghz, depends on how much Vcore the cpu needs as they are all different.

cool - the aforementioned pre-build spec has it at a 4ghz o/c, i might go down the aftermarket cooler route to make sure he has a good chance of hitting that.

how does the Corsair Hydro H80 fit? does it use a drive bay or two? or will i need to mod the case?

a youtube vid has it mounted to the rear case exhaust, will it fit?

The H80 should have some TIM pre-applied anyway dude

still cleaner required for the stock stuff on the cpu

as for the asus; he's cheap and i'll be building it for him so it'll prolly be the gigabyte

The advice on here is top notch as always

I think he'd look at me a bit strange if i didn't put an optical drive in there.

Also he mentioned that he'll be playing games mainly along the lines of football manager and total war so i'm wondering if the Gfx card is really required and whether the money would be better spent on 16gig of ram.

Could drop to a Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Dual-X and use the £50 on the ram, though im not sure there'd be any benefit to the extra memory, its not like hes going to be doing a lot of video editing or the likes.

If i could re-jig it would it be worth going to an i7 3.5ghz (would need to find £70 for that obviously) - i've heard it doesn't offer a lot in terms of gaming performance (over the i5).

No doubt by the time he makes his mind up all of the prices will have changed and i'll have to start from scratch

He decided he wanted 16gig of ram, and we saw a 2tb hdd for cheap so he's got that too.

The rest of it is as before with the black and gold prodigy case; just waiting for all of the pre-order stuff to turn up.

Whats the case like for cabling? Will i be able to keep it tidy enough with tie wraps? and is there anything i should watch out for?
