After moving on from my D300 with the built in commander mode to a D3 with no commander I looked at a SU-800 but instead opted for some pocket Wizards which I've just purchased and cant wait to have a play with them.

Got 3 coming so can control 2 flashes from my D3 and can add another when I get a SB-900. :)

Anyone else have them and what do they think of them.

ah. I think I have mis understood what the nikon commander was. I always assumed it was some form of wireless controller?

it is, but it uses the onboard flash to trigger the other units!

I'd personally have waited (And am waiting) for the TTL versions of the pocket wizards to become readily available, massive improvement over the manual ones (even if you want to use it in manual you can now adjust the output from the camera, just like when using CLS) although i think they are even possibly only canon atm =[

Am I right in thinking the newer TTL versions will offer no benefit if you only plan to fire studio strobes? Might be able to pick up some cheaper when the new ones come out.

Do you realise there're iTTL pocketwizards coming soon?

I did here about this but cant find any info when they will be coming out. Any idea's or link to them. It worked out that I paid £110 each for the Pocket Wizards II so I think they will hold there value if I want to move them on for the iTTL ones.

depends on the brand of studio gear Ady, but anything you'll be looking at, then no :) Interfit i think are launching some higher end (for them) studio gear that allows you to control output and even use TTL from the camera.

This page says Q2 for US and April 1st elsewhere (err...). There's a review of the Canon version here.
