Yes, it will pass data without breaking.

Some switches can be powered from PoE as well, don't think you're asking that.
 
Cool you answered my question. Fitting a VOIP at work and don't want separate power supplies for a top office. The rest of the network is wired to one switch but in this one office it has a separate switch (not POE at the moment). I could run more CAT5 but it would be easier to fit another POE switch.

School boy error from me forgetting this office.
