The Studio TV advert (christmas catalogue) some of you may have seen it or not, but basically in the midst of the voice over there is a comment:

"from blu-ray Playstation 3's..... "

Now what is relevant about that, its the truth is it not? Well, as I know someone who works for the company that produced the advert, Sony explicitly wanted them to advertise the Playstation 3, not as a games console but a blu-ray player..... interesting tid-bit, wonder if Sony now realise that MS has too much of a hold on the real gaming market and now just want to shift these things out as the new wave of video player

Not a flame Sony thread, i did own a PS1 and PS2

I think the fact of the matter is, everyone knows the ps3 can play games, even if you asked my grandparents they would know that. What very few people actually know is that it is a good media player too, my parents will eventually be buying one (they've put it off till playtv comes out now :/) , they wouldn't have if i didn't have mine to show what it's capable of as they didn't have a clue... actually neither did i.

I don't think its necessarily that. Most people know of sonys pedigree as it were of a gaming machine. Its probably to let people know that the ps3 actually has the ability to play blue rays. On a few blue rays it says on it compatible with playstation3. So they haven't given up the ghost, merely i believe a education for the consumer who might not realise that its also a video machine as well as a games console that every one knows it is

Sony targetted the Blu-Ray market first and foremost from day one, so it's not surprising. They wanted to be the best media solution as opposed to the best games machine.

they would be foolish not to push blu ray. who even needs to be told that a playstation is a games console?

Indeed, Playstation is a gaming console brand. Playstation as a word sells that aspect. Tagging bluray onto the sales pitch pushes the HD format that's now won the format war.

This seems more to me, A sale on 2 levels. Not pushing the PS3 as a gaming machine secondary.

But pushing the well known playstation brand and its Bluray.
