Kinda late to the party here, but I want to try out a pokemon game.

I didn't have a gameboy when the originals came out and it really wasn't the cool thing to be playing as teenager :p. But not after years from watching from afar, and owning a 3DS, I finally want to play 1.

The question is, which 1 do I buy?

See if you can pick up an old GameBoy Colour and a copy of Red / Blue. Gaming at its finest.

Black and White were good, but I enjoyed HeartGold SoulSilver more on the current 'DS' :)

Pokemon Yellow was pretty awesome on the GBC and the best version of Red/Blue imo.

Gold/Silver were my favourites from the Gameboy Era however.

It's just a shame the newer games were ruined for me once I found out what EV training was...easier to do now but in some of the games it was murder!

Haha, I never knew about EV's until now. Granted I didn't invest as much time in the newer games as the old, but still.

Interesting, I can see how it can ruin it a bit. Bit like with Skyrim and getting a weapon which can one shot everything through blacksmith/alchemy/enchanting mechanics.

Stupid question.

I was checking out auction sites yesterday, and there seemed to be a mix of people of people advertising Pokemon red as either Gameboy, or Gameboy Colour.
Is there a difference?

Can only encourage you to get a gameboy (the MASSIVE brick one) or a gameboy colour and relive red, blue, yellow or gold, silver as in those forms they are some of the best games of all time (just be careful with gold, silver on the gameboy as the batteries in the old carts tend to die after a while)

Getting the DS ones is a good solution to this but the gold, silver remakes are probably the best options (black, white was weird and iv just restarted as I forgot what was going on)

You can download a thing called "NocashGBA" if I remember correctly, I had a craving for some old class pokemon and found a simulator online for it, I found one for the normal GBA and the new one with the two screens. It lets you fully key-bind and customise the screen. I think it is "No$GBA" try youtube tho. Theres just the matter of downloading an English version of the pokemon games, but I remember it taking me less then an hour to play. Hope this helped

All of the games are great, but heartgold/soulsilver are probably the easiest introduction into the series.

I agree. The new ones are extremely farcast and new, I didn't like them at all, but the HG/SS are really good, and included my favorate pokemon - Lugia. It brings back memories :)

The gold and silver remakes IMO were better than the originals.

I loved Silver and Gold but couldn't finish SS, managed to beat the elite 4 and the first Kanto gym LT Surge but gave up shortly afterwards.

Personally I'd try and either play Fire Red on the GBA or Yellow on the original gameboy. Then Soul Silver or Heart Gold on the DS.

Both Plat and Emerald were good Pokemans games, I'd check these out after.

Black/White I grew bored after the 2nd gym, shame really maybe I'll pick it up again some day.

Just bought Black last weekend and working my way through it. Enjoying it a lot.

If you get hooked, might want to think about a DS lite and then get the GBA games and DS games for maximum pokemon overload!
