i'm at my mates house who lives in texas. obviously gambling here is banned so someone had the idea of shoving a massive casinoat the oklahoma border :p
we intend to enter a poker tournament and wondered what tips you guys have. i understand the rules and can bluff and know a few telltale signs of a bluffer but i am no expert. i also know not to play toomany hands and i know when to fold. any tips appreciated thanks

^Then again crap depends. If you end up with say a 2 and a 8, like I've had before, nothing special I called it and on the flop I, turn then river revealed another 2 8's and I won.

But you can sometimes sense when you have crap. Bluffing is fine, just don't do it to excess amounts of cash. A small bet or raise is usually enough to scare quite a few away.

Dont be afraid to gamble or to play aggressively. Remember that in a tourney there are a lot of players who will sit and wait for a hand, if you apply pressure then you can command a table. Having said that know when to fold. Even if you have a nice looking hand sometimes its best to bite the bullet and pass it at the flop. If you feel like you want to play patiently then do. Tournament play in my mind is either go for the quick start and play aggressively to accumulate chips. OR, be patient and play when you're comfortable. However this is far harder as it requires a lot of discipline seeing as you're biding your time to get a nice hand but after waiting a while for it you may not wanna lay it down.
My advice is to play patiently but to shake things up when you can or you'll get priced out of hands or caught out by the gamblers. Good luck!

1. Don't bluff against amateurs
2. Play strong hands and be patient
3. Do not slow play aces or kings
4. Position is important. Being last to act is a huge advantage
5. View a bet as a way to obtain information, not money. If you get the information, the money will take care of itself.

I think there's been some decent advice in the thread but it is such a huge subject that you will only get the odd nugget from here.

I'll concentrate on giving some advice for the mechanics of the tournament rather than how to play poker.

1. If you want to stand a chance of winning then do not drink alcohol to excess.

2. Announce everything you do before you do it. This will minimise the chances of your actions being mis-interpreted. For example in many caisnos, throwing a single chip in is deemed to be a call no matter what the value. If you meant a raise and announce "rasie" before acting then your verbale declaration will be binding.

3. Be polite and curteous. Some professionals can use winding people up to their advantage but it probably isn't a great idea if you're new to the game.
