A few of us try and have some monthly poker nights, it's a mixed bag of talent too which is always amusing when the guy who used to play all the time online and at casino's and win big at those gets beat by the guys who know next to nothing :)

Elaborate on the Ace straight please, Ace straight should win, unless other player had a straight run (23456 suited in your opponents case)

Unless of course, the Ace was on the table and your opponent had higher hole cards, for example
You = 2&3, Opponent = 7Q, on table 4589A, in that case, your opponent would win having the highest straight with Q - (589QA)
I hope this helps.

What on Earth are you talking about. Such a confidently worded post considering what you have said is so wrong on every level. Lol

I've re-read what he posted and it appears that he has confused straight with flush. If you swap straight with flush in his post everything falls back in to place.

fancy a game of poker?

A top tip for beginners - the more people you are playing with the higher the chance that one of them has a good hand. This means your two pair is not as strong in a 10 player game as it is in a 4 player game.
if they need to be told that then they really ought not to be playing poker. or indeed interacting with others in any way at all :p

People put too much emphasis on bluffing in poker, in my experience if you spend more time studying probability and less time studying people you will tend to play better. Get your play sorted first then worry about what everyone else is up to.
dunno, i know very little about probability but do very well i real life poker just by learnng to read people. that's not much use for online pker though. avatars don't have too many 'tells' :(

Didn't we used to have a weekly poker tournament on OcUK? Miss that.
oh, someone should get that started up again

My local social club play poker 2 nights a week and anyone can join in you just rock up but better if you are known/regular in the club. Not sure what they play for or what the stakes are as I've never joined in or asked but I don't think it's that fast and not everyone plays every night it's on.

From what you've said above your play doesn't sound all that conservative.

This advice is far too generalised, depends entirely who you are playing against. If you are at a table of calculating players then playing to the odds won't give you an edge, and bluffing may be effective. If you are at a table of bluffers then sitting tight and only starting with AA AK KK QQ JJ or drawing hands at good value can give you a big edge.

Don't think you should be giving out advice on poker...

I still think at the level that most people will be playing at there's significantly more value, especially for newer players, in knowing your outs, probabilities, and identifying when you"'ve got the nuts rather than worrying about representing a particular hand. I'm not saying bluffing and reading doesn't factor as you skill up butbif you can't get the basics down and understand from a probability point of view when you should and shouldn't be playing hands then all the faking in the world won't help you.
