Hi!

First time in here. Got a D5100 earlier this week (Birthday pressie) with the twin lens kit (18-55 VR and 55-200 VR). Also accompanied by the "D5100 for Dummies" book (which is very much appreciated :o) Thus far haven't taken a single pic other than the odd daft one of people in the house due to only having the camera in darkness (i.e. when I get home from work) and I'm not up to taking night shots yet. This weekend I'll be snapping away like a mad man.

I've been yearning to have a stab at decent photography for years (since I was ~12 and am now 30,) but never had the time nor money to do so before. Here's hoping it's going to last. :)

Apologies in advance if I ask any daft questions!

Yeah I'm not too far ahead of you :) I've had my 650d for a few weeks now and it's been fun :D

Have fun dude, it's addictive! It's worth spending time balancing your shooting skills with processing skills as well if you aren't already familiar with Photoshop. It's a good way to "do photography stuff" when the conditions are rubbish outside anyway.

I'd recommend a book - Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure.

Made a massive difference to my understanding. I'm reading his book on understand flash atm.

Book ordered :)

Went to St James' park, Buckingham Palace and Green park today. Didn't have any real ideas on what sort of snaps to take, so just took a variety of stuff to get use to different light conditions and so forth. It was tougher than I thought :o

~500 photos taken in all, most not very good at all. Here's a set with my favourites of the day taken :)

Just snap away to begin with, after a while, reading books, you will develop your 'eye' for things. repeat as often as you want. :)

Absolutely. I didn't expect to get even one good photo today, but there's one or two I'm quite fond of. They don't compare to those in the pic thread, but I'm certainly chuffed. :)

Another outing tomorrow, will be headed to the docklands!

It can take ages to get the feel for a photo. Sometimes you'll even know there's a shot there, but can't quite get an angle you like. It's very frustrating. Personally I found it of more help to sit and read things on the internet, then have a specific idea of what you want before you go out, or if there's a place you know of, plan to take photos there, and look up best settings for that situation, then try to figure out why what settings are to be used.

I remember spending most of my first year taking photos, being VERY frustrated! I still stuck 7 years later :D
