Police should commute in uniform

The typical 'stupid' criminal (chuck in borderline psychosis and massive personality disorders for good measure)

that's not really typical then is it?

That is very specific and incredibly rare the genuinely psychotic aren't all that common.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people in the UK that would target the homes of Police officers.

This is an incredibly stupid idea, that could put the family of the officers at risk.

Why is it a failure on the side of the police if there are some people out there that would use this as an opportunity to harm police officers?

True, I should have said it was a failure of society and the criminal justice system, of which the police play a large factor.

yet apparently none of this "plenty of people" and apparent roving gangs of psychotic killers we have have never really thought "meh I'll follow one of the hundreds of officers coming out of that station today"?

You realise you're the real target of this initiative right?

the guy with the twisted world view where psychotic people with personality disorders waiting to follow them home and kill them are "typical" of all criminals, it's something to calm down your paranoia.

Do they expect the Officer in question to tackle the criminal without a radio, hand cuffs, baton and Capta?

They would have a radio, cuffs and a baton...

I think it's a bad idea, people are entitled to a private life, this would jeopardise this.

The issue is more around the bad bunch of the local community suddenly becoming very aware that an officer lives at number 50 when he walks home in his uniform at 6pm every day.

More uniforms on the street is not the answer in an environment when the uniform is not respected.

Sounds like a completely unwarranted intrusion into Police Officer's personal time to me, as well as bizarre and unenforceable. What if they're not going straight home afterwards? Are they to sit around in the pub/concert hall/their Mother-in-Law's in uniform until they return home? If they're going straight to the airport on holiday should they remain in uniform until they return home?

Not to mention that it either creates a whole load of apparent police officers out there either with no authority to act, or forces Police Officers to work an additional time without extra pay or proper equipment and backup.

Also police regs state full PPE must be worn, this includes CS, which you cant take home...

Stupid idea is stupid.

Absolutely ridiculous idea.

Dreamt up by somebody who has no idea about anything. It is all well and good if their warped idea of policing is going for a walk around a 'ballykissangel' village and nodding their hat to bob the greengrocer.

Try going to work alone through somewhere like Brixton or Tottenham in a police uniform without any means of assistance given that 2/3 weeks ago gang members were plotting to execute any police they could get their hands on.

If this were to happen which it wouldn't, I would give it a week before somebody had a petrol bomb thrown through their front window.

Yup. If you consider that when I lived with a teacher she had her tyre's slashed and our house was smoke bombed; I can see why a police officer living in a rougher area wouldn't want the local trash taking knowing where they live.

That's a good point actually. I've much more sympathy with that argument than the "oh I live in a rough area" one. Well make it not a rough area then

As you say it would be easy to follow a policeman home from them leaving the station but that isn't the problem, its the opportunists that come into contact with an off duty policeman and start hassling them.

I'm strongly against this idea because my brother who is a Met officer is against it. He completely changes into "civvies" if he goes home on public transport because people can still recognise him as an off duty office by the boots he's wearing. It may not lead to violence but even harrasment and cat calls on your way home is the last thing you want after pulling a 14 hour shift...

Also remember that once an officer has left the station they do not have many of their personal protection equipment such as sprays and baton. It's ridiculous to think officers won't get attacked because of this.

I think I'd rather see the drug dealer that lives at the bottom of our road (that nothing ever gets done about) be made to wear a ridiculous constume, than the police be made to wear uniform.

We have a female police officer who is single, who lives at the top of the road - I only know this because I've done some jobs at her house. I don't think it would be long before a chancer from the chav community around here would do something.

Thats one hell of a way to just improve statistics "on the cheap"

It should be voluntary and paid.. Do you think they will pay ? no chance.

Also what is the use of an officer with no radio communication that could potentially get into a situation with no back up options?

Why not just dress up mannequins and sit them on buses and trains - high viability :)

Exactly my sentiments. On duty they've got access to handcuffs, asp, CS, and a radio. Off duty they're going to have... a whistle and some strong language. If it came to them needing to rely on the equipment they'd have whilst on duty, there's going to be problems. I doubt very much that they'd relax the laws on the officers taking home things like cuffs, asps and CS for this initiative.

Seems eminently sensible to me :)

Why, if the Police Officer is working, pay him. Apart from the fact that there is an issue with carrying cuffs, baton and Capta, not to mention their stab proof vest.

If this goes ahead would you be happy footing the bill for secure storage of a radio and Capta and the homes of Police Officers?
