Poll: Do you run 3D mark @ performance or HQ when Benching?

Yes

No

Whats 3D mark?

The general rule is that millions run the bench @ performance

I don't? Haven't run it in ages but I would leave everything at default settings when benchmarking. Shame, I'm not one of the millions?

I remember back in the day when 3DMark2001 was all the rage that people would use different LoD settings per test and also clock their cards so high that the tests would be artifacting a ton and as long as it completed the test that was all they cared about, hardly a fair test though.

if you did each test individually instead of doing them all in a row as a batch test you would get a higher score aswell :D
and nvidia cards always had the advantage because they could force negative LOD while ati cards couldnt.

personally i dont see the point of using settings different to those you would in a regular game or the results arent relevant to you anyway but i supose 3dmark is along way from beeing along the lines of performance for a game.

where as there was a time when it was quite similar and showed off a range of game styles.

the helicopter one , max payne rip off , dragon rpg attack thing etc which was in 2000?

Yep I used to do that. I would also change the test order and re-reun different tests till I got the maximum fps I was expecting.

Sounds sad now going to all that effort but everyone else was and that was the only way to compete.

General rule if you want to compare against the database is use performance. If comparing yourself between your old or new card, it doesn't matter what settings so long as both are the same (I usually do default)

If you are trying to get points on hwbot for example, pointless running it at anything but performance as your score will be too low.

Sense at last Greebo:)

Never really been into benchmarking, l'll run one now and again to see how much difference there is between stock set up and a overclocked setup of a new installed component.

If l need to find out how a new GPU performs l'll read a couple of reviews or read the benchmarking threads in the forum. So basicly its done for me and l love the ATI and NVidea GPU Fan Wars, great entertainment keep it going Fanboys lol. :D

I always run 3D mark when I buy new hardware. Its nice to log into orb and see my old specs and the cards and compare the scores.

Last run was with 4870 and got around 8000 Ran it again with 6870 and got 17000. Interesting as in I paid less for the 6870 than I did the 4870 both purchased on release day.
