Aroundabout 5 years in my main rig, but could see duty for another 5 in friends or family's rigs. TBH these days, it also depends on how much time I have for games in between life, work, kids, etc.

If a GPU is only lasting a year you’ve bought the wrong one

I remember the days when it seemed that game design and processing power were moving so fast that you really needed to upgrade at least every couple of years to avoid missing out. But I find it hard to believe that anyone really has the unavoidable need to upgrade a system/GPU today that was considered high end in 2024, 2023 or even 2022. Yes you might want it because FOMO, but actually need it to even be able to play recent releases?

My RX Vega 56 cost me £350 in late 2017 and it’s still playing things nicely at 1080p.

I think a lot of people fall prey to the high resolution, high refresh rate FOMO brain washing.

My original cyberpunk play throughs were on Vega 64 1440p ~ 40-45 FPS and it was perfectly playable. But I guess I played OG doom in 240 letterbox window back in the day so everything looks great to me.
I have a couple of PC's for the kids friends to play on from mostly salvaged parts, From memory one is I5 2600k / RTX 3050 and the other i5 4570 / RX5600. At 1080p they have a great time and there always friends wanting to come over and play.

5+ years here because the only propositions in the >£1k category I'd ever consider are / were the 4090 (see the 'is the RTX 4090 futureproof thread') and I guess now the 5090, on account of it being a scaled up 4090 in price and performance.

I can't think of any other cards over £1k from any era I could have gone for and not regretted all too soon.
