Notice there are a few other auto drivers on the forum now.
Can we have a poll to see the sort of split between the 2 transmissions.

for the sake of the poll, auto = any car without a clutch pedal.

Autos should never have been invented

And for those people like my first wife that got thrown off a horse and destroyed her left kneecap so she could not physically drive a stickshift?

Or for those people like my mother that was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis in her ankles and could not physically drive a stickshift nor a car without PAB and PAS? And yet she was still driving herself to work up until 3 weeks before cancer claimed her life?

Personally I find your comment a little offensive, but that's just me. I have quite a few opinions about cars and thier drivers (especially UK ones), but I think I'll just keep them to myself at this point in time.......

For the record, I have one stick and two autos on the driveway.....

I dont thik he meant to offend, auto's have their place, but for normal people trying to enjoy driving, Manuel is the only way! for lazy people, or people who dont care about driving there great. Finally for the disabled they are obviously a godsend.
The only exception are those flappy things which Id rather have a stck but more and more cars are going that way. (IM manuel BTW)

Mickey D, ditto. My mums brother has rheumatoid arthritis and has to drive an automatic (although he has a manual license).

My sister however was born prematurely and has mild muscular dystrophy and arthritis which affects her knees at the moment. But it is more the muscular dystrophy which means she wouldn't be able to operate a manual transmission. So she is going for an automatic only license.

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn people who need to drive automatics or just because they choose to. So what? It doesn't affect you.

I've not had a go of an automatic myself..I think it would be quite weird really. Even though I've only been driving just over two years.

Yes, I'll agree. There should NEVER be a "sports car" with an automatic transmission. It just violates the sanctity and reasoning behind them!!

But for a daily grind "soccer mom" car??? No offense, but why the hell WOULD you drive a stick? If all you're using it for is transportation from point A to point B and it is NEVER intended to be anything more, why WOULDN'T you drive an auto? It completely blends in with the whole PAS, A/C, driver's aids such as ABS, ESP, TC, etc. thing.

I mean 4 or 5 doors, more "comfort" items than most people will ever find in a house, most times a better sound system, and all it's for is to get you where you want to go. You CANNOT tell me that anything less than 10s 0-60 could in ANY way be considered "sporty", so why would you want to ADD to the things you have to do at the end of a hard day at work? Get in, put the thing in gear, turn on some relaxing tunes, and go home. No work to it.

Granted, for those (like me) that like to have fun with thier cars and they are more than "just" transportation, gimme as much control of the car as possible. Stuff your driving aids and PAS!! Give me an early 70's cabriolet with power-nothing and a screaming little 2.0L hemi-head, DOHC 16 valve 4 cylinder and four tyres with more grip than King Kong and i'm in pig heaven!!

But catch me at the end of a hard work day and I want a Lazy-Boy recliner with wheels........

I domean for more sports and luxery sports cars.
I do agree they are good for people with disabilitys, i was in 2 minds about saying them as an exception incase it had a topic derailment :o

Mines an auto although its tiptronic so It's the nearest you can get to a manual without the clutch.

I agree about people being lazy with auto's though. My wifes mum, dad and brother all have auto's and auto licences which I have never understood why the hell you would do that. Her brother now wants to get an Audi TT auto

I drive a manual.

As I drive small engined shopping cars its the obvious choice but if I had a car that suited an auto gearbox and it didn't sap too much power or economy then I would consider it.

i would prefer smaller cars being auto tbh, you dont buy one for its 'power' or 'economy'.

I've just changed to an auto for the first time and after driving a turbo diesel for 10 years.most of my driving is rush hour commute now and I do find it useful. There is always kickdown for a little fun.
I am leaning towards Micky_D's views nowadays.

Cobra is manual
Jeep is an Auto

I agree with Mickey_D, for normal, day to day driving, and motorway munching, why bother with a manual???
Or, is it that every single time you get in your car, you absolutely must drive it in a spirited fashion?

If I go out for a 'drive' I will take the Cobra, any other time I take the Jeep.

Edit: Just saw the poll, voted Auto, as that is my daily driver

manual here I just prefer it, I don't find it a huge hassle round town to change gears myself. Otherwise what would my left foot do? It would feel all left out.

I do like auto boxes for long distance cruising though it's just easier
