Poor fuel economy

350-400 miles of fast A+B road driving, and town driving, from a 38 litre tank here :)

well it depends how the ecu reads the temp.

the thermostat being stuck open would make the car take longer to heat up, by maybe 5-10mins longer.

In this weather it's quite likely to never warm up. The thermostat on my Honda has stuck open this week (changing it today) and it barely moves off cold on a 30 mile journey. Fuel economy has suffered considerably as would be expected. This is also not good for the cat or for engine wear in general.

Matteh, you should have a good 5 litres left when the light comes on, so 220miles in 35 litres (7.8 gallons) is about 28mpg. That's not horrendous for a 1.8, but certainly lower than expected which is easily explained by the engine running cold.

when my light comes on, find a petrol station asap! i've run out before because of it :(

ive just gone for a hoon 'round and the temp guage seems to be going up again, so hopefully it was just the overfilled coolant.

although, i didnt have to drain anything, it was already half empty :( :(
