I redeveloped my mum's business website (http://www.simplyflowers.biz) a few months ago and hoped to have it properly listed on Google. However, this seems to have not quite gone to plan! It seems to list ok on other search engines (Yahoo, MSN, for example).

For example, if i search for 'Simply Flowers', or 'Ledbury florists' the website is nowhere near the first page :(

What could be done to improve its listing on Google?

Thanks

First of all, very nice site :) . Good clean layout, nice colours.

Everything looks good in terms of meta tags, layout of the site, etc. The only thing I can think of is maybe putting more text on the front page, repeating key words like florists, ledbury etc.

Also, google really loves you to have links from other websites. Try contacting similar sites and getting them to link to you.

In my experience, google is hard to design for, since it places so much importance on links.

Replace the first <h2> with <h1>, replace all other <h2>'s with <p>'s :)

Since we re-developed our website and included more text we've ranked quite highly for phrases around the subject. Obviously the main phrases are competitive and we're way down, but specific areas have generated sales which is quite cool.

Get links from other sites as that's how Google works (in a big way), too.

Or be done with it and spend a bit on Adwords - www.google.co.uk/adwords :)

cant you use hidden text as well? (cant be seen on screen but the spider can read it) and fill this with key words ect to boost the position of the site

Google really doesn't like you doing that and will penalise you for it.

at uni we were told that google page rank works on who links to you and who you link to, so maybe some links to high profile sites which are relevant?

this is what's called pagerank. It has some influence on your google index ranking but there are other important factors involved.

Who links to you is what counts...who you link to won't really help :)

furthermore, if sites with a decent pagerank are linking to you, it seems to help somewhat.

That's the basis of pagerank (at least the original algorithm).

Theres a widely accepted idea that most new websites get put into the google 'sandbox' and rank terribly for the first 6-8 months. What is wierd is that for the first week or so after the site is indexed it will tend to rank well but then it goes into the sandbox for months. The argument seems to be that this was done to try and prevent spam sites.

I have seen this happen to several sites that I have created, www.cerverapollensa.com ranked on the top half of the first page for most of the keywords for about week after google discovered it, now its no where to be seen

Look up the google sandbox theory

6 - 8 is a bit of an exaggeration I think - in the last SEO contest I was in (our team came 2nd) which ran for about 6 months, we dropped for a few weeks about halfway through the contest but then came back up...we learned (guessed :p) some other theories and strategies too but I don't have the e-mails here to remember what they were.It was fun though, we rocked :D
