Poor performance on MacBook?

I've only really used my MacBook for web browsing/email and a bit of Photoshop work. Recently i've been using it to record mixes and edit them etc using Sound Studio.

Now, it's taking the best part of 10 mins to open a 300MB 128kbs mp3 file, then another 10 mins to save it again. Surely this is a bit OTT, my 5+ year old Windows machine will do it slightly quicker. I have the 2.2 core 2 duo with 4GB of RAM...

Perhaps it's the software?

If your computer has little ram, is running other programs in the background or is low on disk space these can affect performance especially applications such as virus scanners or firewalls which dig deep into the system to create filters which look for certain activity.

Just an idea but a fresh install can also help.

its not the ram, as i dont know anyone who needs more than 4gb of the stuf :)

but agree with the fresh install, just back up all ur stuf first :)

Just out of interest, why are you recording to MP3, then opening, editing and saving again? MP3 is lossy and that will degrade the quality noticeably.

I agree what MP3 is 300mb either?

I didn't see the computer specs - Also to save your self time after backup do an Archive and Install rather than Erase and Install.

It's an online radio stream, streaming at 128kbs - a few hours goes into the hundred MB's...

To be honest it wasn't that long since I did a fresh install, and there's not much installed on here. I'll see if I can find some different software to use and if it's any better.

Could be a sign of a failing HDD.

Open Disk Utility, select the HDD on the left hand side, and look at S.M.A.R.T Status.

It may not show but may be failing, it could also be a heat dissipation issue, caused by bad airflow or a failing fan.

Check these things or take it in for testing at a repair centre or Apple Store.

Might be worth trying to "Repair Permission" inside Disk Utility, before you go mad and wipe the whole drive.
