Poor porker

Haha, been there done that, well my dad has anyway. On the strip in the coupe, 3rd gear, when to ram it into 4th because it's a heavy old box, missed and snicked it into second instead. Big old V8 decided it wasn't prepared to fly up to 7000+rpm and suddenly grabbed hold of the rear tyres through the transmission, completely lunching the diff. Again :D

So the car has now done two gearboxes and two diffs on the same drag strip :D

I'm surprised the Porsche doesn't have some kind of intelligent shift to prevent that happening though.

It's not like hitting the clutch would have made any difference by the time he realised what he'd done either.

Anyone with a pair of brain cells would have realised the mistake as soon as the clutch started to bite and you feel an enormous braking force. I've done it before and you know what, I dipped the clutch immediately and didn't just sit there while the engine grenaded, that is just completely stupid.

It's a simple missed shift. What's the big issue?

He was supposed to go to 4th not back down to 2nd so caused all manner of destruction to his engine. And also didn't press on the clutch to release whatever was grinding.

And in the comments he's a douche. :p

Did this to my CTR at about 75. Got 2nd instead of 4th and momentarily locked the fronts. Dipped the clutch immediately, but it still went way over the 8.2k limit! I was very gentle on my car after that (for about 5 minutes anyway).

Real pant-wetting few moments afterwards waiting for something to give way, which fortunately it didn't.

I've done this before on a previous car, but like a normal person I immediately dipped the clutch. The revs went past the limiter, but only for a fraction of a second. No damage.

I find it strange that you wouldn't stamp on the clutch asap.

Ouch! I've done it before but realised when the revs started to rise instead of drop.
I imagine in the heat of a race there was more concentration on the timing of the gear change than on the movement of the gearstick itself...

My dad did something similar with my Modus, meant to change down from 5th to 4th at 70mph but missed and went into reverse instead  Luckily the reversing sensors beeped and he managed to get 4th before bringing the clutch back up.

My heart was in my mouth for a few seconds after that!

Gotta love the alpha males in here

"SHOULD HAVE PRESSED CLUTCH DERRRRRR"

no.....you don't say. I imagine he wanted to ruin his engine, so he deliberatly didn't press it in time....

why else would he have not dipped the clutch then?

i bet the plum didnt even realise he had grabbed the wrong gear and was in fact still mashing the right pedal wondering why it wasnt going faster

Unless you were driving that car at the time, you dont know, and nobody else does.

Everything that has been said is just pure keyboard warrior armchair speculation
