Poor PS3 Visuals .. Help !

Hola !
Bought a PS3 on Tuesday but am constantly bothered by poor visuals on it when compairing it to my 360 performance. Not only is it jaggier than a jaggy thing but the visuals just look 'below par', dont have a better way to describe it.

Pretty much expected not to notice much in the way of difference between the PS3 and 360 with the odd exception of maybe something like colour depth.

Both machines are running 720p on an LG 37LC46, the PS3 via HDMI and the 360 via VGA.

Basically just a little dissapointed with it and was hoping there was some sort of setting I've enabled (or not) during setup thats making it look so poor when compairing it against the other console.

Only played GT5, Uncharted and Resistance at the moment. Still have Ratchet & Clank, Motorstorm and Ninja Gaiden to try.

Any ideas ?

Hi,

Yeah there is some noticeable aliasing on GT5 prologue and Resistance was a launch title but the graphics do get better once you get well into the game. But if your dissapointed with the visuals on Uncharted theres something wrong with your eyes it has some of the best graphics on any games system ive seen ever.

Cheers,

Or there's something wrong with his setup? :p

There are quite a few display options to tinker with on the PS3, i know you've set it to display 720p but it might be worth checking again just to make certain that 1080i is unchecked as that would cause the problems you're describing.

Other than that all i can suggest is looking at a few FAQs and determining what each option does and see how it affects your setup. I know GT5:P has some aliasing issues, but uncharted is just gorgeous to look at so i imagine something is probably wrong if you're not pleased.

I have this problem too, I suspect its partly to do with using the HDMI and partly due to it only pumping out at 720p and not like the 360's vga which can be set to my tv's res.

I read at the time I was trying to get mine looking better that HDMI gives a sharper picture. I'd need to try a HDMI 360 to confirm it though.

Ok,

I was going to add maybe its unfair to compare vga against HDMI maybe HDMI is giving a truer picture than vga if you see what i mean it maybe highlighting the flaws more? You can try messing with some of the display settings such as RGB full Range and Super white under Display settings but it all depends if your TV supports these modes i think.

I am running at 720p on a HDTV which has a native res of 1366x768 and mine looks great so i dont put it down to the not running at native res comment unless it varies between tv's?

Chers,

I have the same tv as yourself.
I also have a ps3 and a 360 both connected by HDMI.
The picture quality on mine is slightly better using the 360.
Colours with the 360 are more vibrant and a lot of games have less jaggies.
I find prologue on the ps3 to be the best game on the ps3 at the moment regarding the quality of the graphics but there still is a few jaggies.

Hi,

Yeah sorry I realised my first post came off wrong. Didnt really mean to come across like that just tired. Sorry if any offence was caused.

EDIT: Actually thinking about mine defaulted to 1080i When i set it up first and this looked very blurry and ropey so as someone else has stated make sure the only resolution checked is 720p so it forces it to use that as that tends to give the sharpest image.

Cheers,

Apparently, the PS3 uses Cell to do the AA in most games, which doesn't look as good as normal AA. Also, HDMI is a pure digital signal, so it'll make the image sharper and jaggies more visible.

And yes, quite a few games on PS3 look worse than their 360 counterparts.

I find prologue to be one of the better games on the ps3 but even with that you can see some jaggies.
I have also watched a few blu-ray movies and find them to be amazing.
I think on the game side the quality has got to be down to the programing

Just unchecked 1080i and left it on 720 and 1080p, for some reason upscaling was turned off so that wouldnt have been helping matters ;)

However it still doesnt look right. Its so hard to explain it. Its almost like the screen is so 'sharp' that its showing up any imperfections by 100% and as a result even Uncharted is looking rather poor for jaggies as they are very prominent. As mentioned, it may have something to do with HDMI over VGA but as my 360 is a release day one so I cant compair the 2 on HDMI.

As a comparisan, I've just been playing Viking on the 360 and tested the new settings on Uncharted and taking the main playing character (not scenery etc) as an example, Viking is very smooth and believable looking with no real graphical issues where as in Uncharted the guy almost looks like he is built out of lego (ok, ott but thats how it feels at the moment).

I've no doubt that this is something to do with my setup, just frustrating as I know I shouldnt notice much between the 2 platforms what so ever.

Will check out the FAQ :D

*Ninja Edit*
Please dont get me wrong, Im not trying to start a flaming thread about each console, far to old to be bothered by that kind of thing. Just asking for advice as I've been dissapointed by how the PS3 is displaying on my TV at the moment. This may purely be down to my expectations rather than the hardware. I fully understand that there will be varying differences between the platform.
All I want to achieve is to get full enjoyment out of my hardware, not bothered about what badge is on the front of it or who manufactures it ... Just a gamer :D

Turn the sharpness down on the tv? Or check the AVforums for settings for your TV, maybe that will help

Messed about with most settings now, including TV settings and made things look a bit better. But coming to the conclusion that this is mostly a HMDI thing over what Im used to on VGA.

Thanks for the input people, I'm a bit happier now :D

Good to hear that it isn't bad enough to annoy you now. Unfortunately it seems that the analogue signal from VGA might be blurring the image slightly as a sort of make-shift anti-aliasing with the 360. If you've got a spare tenner it might be worth investing in a PS3 component cable just to see if it helps matters?

Welcome to my thoughts a couple of months ago.

You get used to it after a while :)
