Poor SATA performance

System setup is:

Gigabyte K8N-SLI Pro board with SATA II
Hitachi 160Gb 7K250 Sata
Maxtor diamondmax 9 80Gb

Cables are all connected properly, Latest forceware drivers installed, and the drives are both showing as SATA, but the performance seems to be slow. I've checked it out using HDtune, and the Hitachi is showing a 23ms seek time, with a burst of 58-59MB per second, which to me seems slow.

Any clues what's going wrong, or is my drive on the way out?

Numbers do seem a little low. What are the max, min and average transfer rates as reported by HDTune?
