Poor signal problem solved... Got a Femtocell

Grr I want one. Have just moved, me and my partner now get almost no signal, she's on contract with o2 I'm on PAYG with 3

Do you get 3g even if you wouldn't have it normally?
Yep it'll give you the whole lot, like I said it's basically your own personal cell tower.

I need one of these for Vodafone. But I cannot believe they are charging £100 for the device. The amount of frustration I get by talking on the phone and the other person cannot hear me.

For all networks including voda the cost depends on how much of a good customer you are, if you're out of contract just threaten to leave. Phone up and try :)

Voda gave me one for £20. I was on a £50+ a month contract, mind.

plugged it in, and ive had full signal since! excellent bit of kit, if your worried about ya signal, id ring up your provider and try and get them give ya one, i think 100+ quid is a bit steep, but for free they are brilliant!

OK a little baffled here as to what the point of these little boxes are, you plug it into your home network and it allow you to get a faster connection on your phone?
Why not just use wifi on your home network in the first place?
Seeing as it is using your home network surely it cannot give you a faster speed than your home network can supply?
Is it just to allow you to get a signal? If so why not just use the landline?
What am I missing?

it allows you to get full network signal on your phone. so when people call/text me i can actually answer it.

Im only at home for 8 days a month, so people contact me via mobile all the time, as they know they will get me, the signal at my home address is so poor though, i can only take calls in 1 room. Now i can take them anywhere i want, and also in the garden!

its horses for courses, the only time ive ever used my landline is when people have called me and ive had to ring them back because my signal dropped, whats the point in paying for calls when i get them for free?

oh, and no, i dont really see why they market it as getting 3g in the whole of your home, as you say, just use the wifi... :/

It's for people who give up their landline, an ever increasing amount of people. 3G marketing is just because it supports 3G services including geo-location with triangulation, wideband calls, 3G audio calls etc etc...

At work we have the next generation of this service (mesh femtos) which bathes the building with signal. This should arrive in business rollouts within the next few years, it's extremely good.

But how can you give up your landline and yet still have home broadband which requires a landline?

I quite understand what Davido is saying about getting better cellular reception, and for that usage I can see the point.

I have done this for years with Virgin Cable. there are other methods like wimax etc... around the UK but I would imagine Virgin are the biggest way of doing this. This is also extremely popular with students, anyone who wants to surf without their parents filtering their internet etc... there is more market here than you would expect. It's mostly an under 40 thing.

These work great, 3 also gave me one for free after them doing a few tests over the space of a week. i wouldn't pay for one though!

with some (i know virgin will do it) you can have cable internet, without having a phone line... so its 1 less bill to pay! the only reason we have kept ours is because virgin have given it us for free as part of our package, and it wouldnt actually save us any money (unless we cancel our broadband/tivo then take it out again, and even then its not much, about 3 quid per month)

I just tried to get one from three. Im currently on a rolling 1 month contract (24 month finished dec) and wanting to get the S4 next month. They told me they wont send me one for free without renewing my contract, but I wont renew the contract if I can't get signal at work. Grrr

They told me they would escalate it to their complaints department to see if they can do anything.

Hello,
How does it work? Does it just plug into a spare ethernet socket in your router or something else ?

Somebody is not reading the thread. It's also quite bizzare how you almost wrote everything I did word for word.

Yep that's the basics of it, it just gives you your own personal cell tower than runs through the web.

And there was me thinking I'd just not hit post reply.... Why post if ya ain't read the thread -. -

It's not like it's 100 pages long....

Oh, and btw, I've still not had any less than full signal whilst I've been at home. So I'm very pleased with it!
