Poor TF2 Performance?

Just playing 2Fort on the bridge with a few soliders firing rockets and my FPS plummets to 35?

I'm running everything on max/1680/4AA/16AF. The only thing I can think of is my non-overclocked Q6600.

Should it make that much different?

Shouldn't be. Tried validating your TF2 files? Right click TF2 in your 'my games' list, click properties, then find the files tab and click 'validate integrity of game cache' to remove any possible errors.

Updated ATI drivers? Full bloom?

I'm currently running the latest drivers (9.1).

On the bridge with nobody around I was getting about 45fps :/

TF2 is CPU hungry and isn't multi threaded, so you are playing it with a 'single core' 2.4GHz chip. Get it overclocked a bit :)

Yeah but surely it shouldn't be that bad.
Yes it should. Source is massively cpu dependent, so it's no suprise that your framerate is dipping into the 30's when there's lots going on, especially as 2.4ghz would bottleneck a single 4870, let alone a x2.
Anyways - tempted to just buy a P5Q Pro.
Doubt your motherboard has anything to do with it tbh, unless it hasn't got any oc'ing options, in which case, get the p5q. :)

That's the issue - for some reason my board will no longer hold an OC.

However I'm not sure if I should just save for an i7.

i noticed that what ever rig u have there still is some lag in tf2 when maybe all of the server people killing each other in one area.

how ever valve promised to bring quad core support with scout update or later on they said something implementing some l4d code in tf2 or something

i play tf2 32 player server

16cssa 16x af all maxed 1920x1200 dont go below 130fps but im running i7 @ 3.66

source is heavy cpu biased. if you think its server related join ukcs servers there the best :)

tf2 is multicore enabled to a certain extent though as thats what source 2007 was about

you could try "mat_queue_mode 2" in console but your game may become unstable.

If I turn everything to low apart from AA/AF/Resolution - I still get 45-50fps on the bridge on 2Fort - that is annoying.

Oh well.
