Hi all. Really hope someone can help me here.
I am using an Asus RT-N66U. Signal for wifi at home has never been great, but on a visit for Christmas to the in laws, I was stunned. My father in law has the exact same router. His house is 2 floors and god knows how many rooms. The router is located in the study on the ground floor.
There wasn't a place in the house that didn't get me full signal.
So when I got home I was annoyed my router is hopeless.

To better understand I've made some images. First, this is the WiFi map of my apartment. It's a 2 bed flat on one floor.

As you can see, I shouldn't get that much drop off for such a short distance. The wifi in the toilet/bathroom is unusable and the 2nd bedroom is hopeless.
When I pop outside the front door, the signal also drops. Not to the point of unusable, but watching youtube is futile. I'm on a 125meg connection by the way.

Here is some wifi scans of the area. Firstly, right beside my router.

Mine is the red one, with the silly name. Don't ask, my partner did it.

Now another scan taken from the bathroom.

Finally, my settings for the router:

The things I have tried:

Changing wifi channels.
Moving router away from DECT phones and the TV area. But due to cable restrictions, I can't move it any more.
Installing custom firmware on the device in an effort to increase range.
Used 2 other wireless routers, results similar.

The only thing I can think of is that there are too many other wifi signals in the area. But if that is the case, then wifi is more useless than I thought.

Thanks in advance!

What channels did you try?

As Bledd says, up the power is the first step then you want to pick an uncongested channel or a channel in between current allocated bands - 3,4 or 8; or potentially 11 as it appears no networks use that channel (in the toilet/bathroom anyway).

Otherwise look at 5GHz if you can.

I returned the ASUS N55U because I found the signal terrible plus the modem part of it was pants.

That said I really feel like you because I read so many great reviews and saw videos of people saying that ASUS make great routers.

From a firmware perspective don't trust the button in the GUI that 'checks' for latest update - it told me i was up to date but I was months behind -I had to DL manaully from ASUS.

I believe the power thing should help with range though

I'm pretty sure you can use up to 13 in the UK, 11 in the States and 14 in Japan? with neighbours using 1, 6, 11 you are always going to get overlapping though even on channel 13.

BTW OP you might want to remove your preshared key, if anyone finds your address you might have a camp spring up outside your house. :p

Thanks for the replies.
I've boosted it to 100 and set the channel to its highest. 13U.
Very, very slight increase but nothing major. What annoys me is both my other routers are just as terrible. This worries me about buying another more expensive router and having the same issues.

PW has been sorted and change also :P

I ended up buying a TP-Link TL-WA901ND wireless access point (although that also has some issues) to extend my usable Wi-Fi over our house.

For us that has offered the best solution.

Alas no.
My only solution was to dig out a powerline adapter and connect it so I had a spare wireless router at the end of the hall. In effect using 2 routers to give me greater range. While I have now got my wish of having WiFi in the toilet...still get signal issues outside. The only thing I can fathom is somehow the construction of the building is causing issues. Unless I move house, I will never get good WiFi.

Must be the same for me then, rather disappointed but at least it should be more stable than the vm superhub. Thanks
