I'm ashamed to say that I'm failing to fix my own PC at the moment. I work in IT and fix PC's every day, but I'm having a complete blank with this one.

About two weeks ago it started Blue Screening and restarting on me, after which is said Invalid Boot Disk on my Windows Disk. I've since reformatted and tried numerous other drives and also bought a brand new drive. All seem to have the same problem. This rules out the HDD.

I then decided (more impulse rather than to fix it) to upgrade my CPU to a AMD64 X2 4800+ which has only been installed a week. This PC had the same symptoms before AND after the new CPU, however they have got worse since the install. I'd say it's possible it's the CPU, but not a hardware fault, more a configuration problem.

I'm left with a machine that I cannot install windows on anymore. XP Setup gets as far as the "Setup is copying files...." section and it will freeze. Sometimes at 3%, sometimes at 10%....it's pretty random. I've tried making a copy of my XP CD to see if the CD itself is rubbish but that makes no difference. I've currently only got the one HDD that I'm trying to install windows on plugged in. All others are unplugged.

I'm not even getting a error message during install. It just locks up...

One other symptom that might be related is that in Windows while it's Idling, my PC will Lock Up and the Soundcard will let out the worst screaming/pulsing noise you'll ever hear.

My HW should be in the Sig, but just incase, here it is.

AMD64 X2 4800+ (Not OC'd)
ASUS A8N SLI Premium (Latest Firmware)
Geil 2GB DDR 400 PC3200
Geforce 7800GTX
Creative X-Fi

Any suggestions? I'm at a dead end.

Check the memory, remove one stick if you have two and then the other one. Also try removing all non essential components, such as cd drives, sounds cards etc, and try again. Then one at a time reinstall until you find the culprit.

What psu have you got?

I've got a Hiper Type R 580W.

I've tried with just one stick in and no Sound Card installed but it's still not looking good. It seems to take ages to load up the Windows setup.

I'm just trying the one stick of RAM in the different slots now to see if that makes a difference.

Could it be as simple as a BIOS Misconfiguration?

Thinking about it though.....it could be the motherboard that's gone. Yesturday it forgot it's settings :(

I'm still playing...

Im gonna say get the memory tested out first using memtest.

If that passes then try another Windows XP disc. Theres no point in making a copy of the same disk which might have failed. Your only making another copy of a dead disk. :-/
