POPCORN vs Revo/netbook etc

I recently sold my C-200 and replaced it with a Revo, upgrading it to 2GB of RAM and slapping XBMC live on it. Far superior and half the cost...Really is a no brainer!

The advantage with a revo/netbook over a popcorn is that you could install a tv tuner and record tv too:)

I didn't know you could install a tuner, but the GUI is just a million times slicker and very, very intuitive. It will also allow a huge amount of Plugins like BBC iPlayer (UK IP's Only). They are constantly updating it and bringing out new skins and new functionality. The community is better than Popcorns and there so much more that you can do with it!

Really pleased I changed away from Popcorn. Any questions, fire away!

I have a tt1501 budget dvb-c, a tt3200 dvbs2 and a full featured dvb-c card.

How do I fit one or 2 of these into the revo.?

Also i've seen a few guides with VDR+XBMC that look pretty awesome.

Can I get HD content with the DVB-S card playing through the revo?

I was considering junking all my hacked computer stuff and getting a humax freesat+ for the sat, keeping the pop for the movie playback, and using my reident living room linux box for music and iplayer.

using a revo with tuner could nail these three things with one. I'm getting past the tage of constatnly fiddling with things - I want to follow a guide or 2 and have the thing working. needs high WAF and childAF. with remote etc.

As I said, I had no idea you could install a tuner, so I can't help you with that I'm afraid. I was under the impression that FreeSat had its own version of iPlayer though?

Only reason I'm not going with an ION over my PCH A110 is their inability to bitstream HD Audio :(

This really doesn't matter. The 'HD' audio stuff is all such nonsense, barely any advantage to lossless on 99.9% of setups and we can't hear the higher depth and resolution tracks at all. Only nice thing is the higher bitrate core tracks as standard really.

Which HD audio specifically? It'll pass through DTS & AC3, but will not bitstream DTS-HD or True-HD sound, but, to be honest, I very much doubt I'd be able to tell the difference anyway between DTS & DTS-HD (but that's purely subjective, of course). It however will pass through the 'core' of DTS-HD (essentially the 'standard' DTS track).

Most of the files I have are just 'standard' DTS, and I imagine most will continue to use DTS for the next 3-5 years.

This is a good thread for anyone thinking about it...http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1185529

While we are on the subject of popcorn hour media player/libraries etc. Has anyone found a really good mp3 player substitute for the built in one that is, frankly, awful.

I just want something like on XBMC or even a winamp clone would do....

No :(

One of my 'problems' with the system as well. I knew it was no slimp3/squeezbox when I got it, but I failed to grasp how bad it really is. It's easier to fire up the laptop, ssh into my linux box, and run command line mp3 player.

The best I got running was MPD Jukebox but it required you to have all kinds of other things installed to get it to work.

The combination of them meant that the hard drive would randomly spring to life while we were watching TV and for the life of me I couldn't work out why or what options to turn off to stop it. Uninstalling everything I had installed fixed it though

How much storage space does everyone have in their popcorn hour setups? I have about 3TB right now, but reckon I am going ot need about 10TB to support my full film collection.

How do you have 3TB in your popcorn?

I have a 500GB drive, but an debating whether to put a 1.5TB in, or maybe get a SD-SATA adaptor and just use a small SD card for the stuff and network everthing else.

with the popcorn dont you find it takes ages loading usb data especially when there is a lot of movies you have on it.

THE YAMJ is really not bad once you use YAMJ gui Config and the right moviejukebox and yamj version. very hard to place it on mapped drives if your aint clever on his dont bother.. if you placeyour movies directly on the NMT popcorn itself then its easy. best to get a SKIN kdoske is great!

The REVO again if you don tplace the right vide drivers playback not great on full hd 24p.

the xtreamer looks faster than the popcorn and hmmmaybe easy to implement the mvijukebox there too but cant be for sure!! just remembered most my movies are on mapped drives on a dobo nas and usb hdd!

Popcorn plays all fies very well maynot look great but with skins does improve the look.

I have the asrock 330, the xtreamer on its way the popcorn a110. at mo popcorn the best. With my htpc with quad processor a 4850 i think id be happy with that and XBMC if you just want a pc connected under the TV!
