Hi there.

Could someone please explain, in simpleton terms, what the differences are between all the various Porsche 911s, i.e. 911 Turbo, GT, Carerra 2, 3, 4 etc

Thanks

James

If I remember correctly -

Carrera (2) - rear wheel drive 911
Carrera (2)S - Same as above with a bit more power
Carrera 4 - 4 Wheel Drive 911
Carrera 4S - As above with a bit more power again
Turbo - Carrera 4S witha Turbo
Turbo S - Not 100% sure. Guessting its a turbo with a bit more power
GT2 - I think it's a hardcore version of the Turbo, but RWD.
GT3 - Lightened, more hardcore Carrera S
GT3 RS - As above, but moreso
Carrera GT - Their supercar. Doesn't really share anything iwth the other 911s.

Brilliant. Thanks.

A couple of other questions on 911s:

1. What is "semi automatic" transmission?

2. If you were in the market for a 911, would you use autotrader, trade or something else?

3. I have looked at some listings, and after the 911 part they have numbers (eg 996 or 997). Is this the age of the car (1996/1997 respectively) or something else?

Thanks

1. Paddle shift
2. Pistonheads
3. Age but read the wiki link :)

1. tiptronic. basically automatic with up and down buttons so you can change the gears yourself. still an automatic with torque converter.

2. pistonheads and owners forums

3. 993 / 996 /997 are model numbers refering to revisions of the 911.

997 is current, 996 is about 98 to 05, 993 is about 93 to 98 etc.

similar to BMW 'e' numbers

Thanks chaps.

I assumed the semi-auto was Tiptronic. Never tried it out, but on paper it sounds cool.

Does anyone have any experience with it? Pros/cons?

James

1. I think it might be paddle shift. Correct me if I'm wrong.
2. Anywhere as long as the car in question is in good condition I suppose.
3. 997 is the latest. 996 is the previous one:

Linked to this last question, is there a reliable site you could recommend for finding out pitfalls and known issues with various ages/models etc.

1) Basically they have an automatic gearbox, but with buttons on the steering wheel that override the auto and let you change gears manually

2) You could use autotrader. I would also check pistonheads.com as well. There are loads of porsche adverts on there, both trade and private

3) this referrs to the generation or shape

993 porsche

996 Porsche

997 Porsche

The above are in ascending order. with 997 being the newest and 993 the oldest

I love the GT2 / GT3

I completely fell head over heals in love when I saw the 959 for the first time (all those years ago), still gives me a shiver when I see a pic of one now

sad isnt it :D

GT2 and GT3 engines are not the same or even developments of the Carrera engines in the 996/7. They are developed from the old turbo engine original found in the 964 turbo and are still 'proper' engines, and have proper features like a dry sump.

In 993 and 996 forms the Carrera 4S did not have more power than a C4. Typically they were turbo-look and often had turbo brakes. The extra weight actually makes them slower.

What are the different 911s, what is semi automatic? Would it be rude to suggest this is going to be more for posing rather than driving?
